Hideo Nomo
is a Japanese former baseball pitcher who played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and Major League Baseball (MLB). He achieved early success in his native country, where he played with the Kintetsu Buffaloes from to . He then exploited a loophole to free himself from his contract, and became the first Japanese major leaguer to permanently relocate to MLB in the United States, debuting with the Los Angeles Dodgers in . Although he was not the first Japanese player in American professional baseball, Nomo is often credited with opening the door for List of Japanese players in Major League Baseball, Japanese players in MLB, due to his star status. Columbus Clippers
The Columbus Clippers are a Minor League Baseball team of the International League (IL) and the Triple-A (baseball), Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians. The Asian Baseball Championship was the fifteenth continental tournament held by the Baseball Federation of Asia. The tournament was held in Seoul, South Korea for the fifth time. The tournament was won by Japan national baseball team, Japan for the ninth time. It was the first time that South Korea national baseball team, South Korea had not won an Asian Championship while hosting the tournament. The Asian Baseball Championship is the main championship tournament between national baseball teams in Asia, governed by the Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA). Baseball at the 1988 Summer Olympics was a demonstration sport for the seventh time. It would become an official sport 4 years later at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Eight teams competed in Jamsil Baseball Stadium in the baseball tournament. The format used was the same as the tournament of four years earlier.
