Heðin Mortensen
Heðin Mortensen (born April 7, 1946) is a Faroese politician and member of the Social Democratic Party. He was the mayor of the Municipality of Tórshavn, serving from January 1, 2021, and succeeded by Elsa Berg in 2024. He was also mayor from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2016. Mortensen was born in Trongisvágur. He worked as a mechanic from 1961 to 1978, when he became an insurance agent for The Faroe Insurance Company (). He headed the Tórshavn Rowing Club from 1973 to 1979, the Tórshavn Athletics Association () from 1975 to 1978, and the Faroese Athletics Association () from 1980 to 2000. He was also the chair of the Tórshavn Theater Society from 1996 to 2003. He has been a supervisory board member of the power company SEV since 1973 and was its director from 1993 to 1997. Tórshavn
Tórshavn (; ; Danish language, Danish: ''Thorshavn''), usually locally referred to as simply Havn, is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands. It is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. To the northwest of the city lies the mountain Húsareyn, and to the southwest, the Kirkjubøreyn. They are separated by the Sandá River. The city itself has a population of 14,038 (2024), and the greater urban area has a population of 23,160, including the suburbs of Hoyv%C3%ADk and Argir. Whaling In The Faroe Islands
Whaling in the Faroe Islands, or (from the Faroese terms , meaning pilot whale, and , meaning killing), is a type of drive hunting that involves herding various species of whales and dolphins, but primarily pilot whales, into shallow bays to be beached, killed, and butchered. Each year, an average of around 700 long-finned pilot whales are caught, alongside varying numbers of Atlantic white-sided dolphins. The practice dates back to the 9th century, and many Faroe Islanders consider eating whales to be an important part of their history. Since 1948, the hunt has been regulated by the Faroese authorities, required its participants to be trained, involved modern boats and communications, and been supervised by police. The Order of the Dannebrog () is a Denmark, Danish order of chivalry instituted in 1671 by Christian V of Denmark, Christian V. Until 1808, membership in the Order was limited to fifty members of noble or royal rank, who formed a single class known as ''White Knights'' to distinguish them from the ''Blue Knights'' who were members of the Order of the Elephant. Streymoy
Streymoy (, ) is the largest and most populated island of the Faroe Islands. The capital, Tórshavn, is located on its southeast coast. The name means "island of currents". It also refers to the largest region of the country that also includes the islands of Hestur, Koltur and Nólsoy. Geography The island is oblong in shape and stretches roughly in northwest–southeast direction with a length of and a width of around . There are two deeply-indented fjords in the southeast: Kollafjørður and Kaldbaksfjørður. SEV (company)
SEV is a power producer and distributor on the Faroe Islands. The company name is derived from the names of islands Streymoy, Eysturoy and Vágar, which established the company on 1 October 1946. All municipalities in Vágar, all in Eysturoy except for Sjóvar municipality and all municipalities in Streymoy except for Tórshavn, Kvívík and Kollafjørður met at the first establishing meeting. Later all municipalities in the Faroe Islands joined SEV. In 2015 60% of the produced electricity of SEV came from green energy sources, 17,8% came from the windmills in Neshagi and Húsahagi, 42,3% came was hydropower. Annika Olsen
Annika Jacobina Olsen (born 13 March 1975, in Tórshavn, grew up in Vágur) is a Faroese politician, high school teacher and former swimmer. She was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Affairs in the Faroe Islands (2011–15) and Minister of Internal Affairs from 2008 to 2011 representing the People's Party (Faroe Islands). Before that she was a member of the City Council of Tórshavn from 2004 to 2008. Annika Olsen has an MA in Nordic languages and literature with a supplementary subject in religion. She is the daughter of Jákup Olsen, a businessman, former politician and former headmaster of Vágur's School and Marna Olsen, born Holm, a retired teacher. The Tórshavn Theater Society () is a theater association in Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands. The society operates the Tórshavn Theater (, ), which was designed and built by H. C. W. Tórgarð in 1926.
