Hex River (Breede River)
The Hex River is a tributary of the Breede River located in the Western Cape of South Africa. The most important settlements along the river are the small towns of De Doorns and Touws River (town), Touws River. Description The headwaters of the Hex River are located on the southern slopes of the Bonteberg Mountains at about 1000 m altitude at the Hex Pass, which leads over to the Great Karoo. In this region, its watercourse is created by the confluence of several small mountain streams. The mountains here can be covered in snow in winter. Its broad valley is largely accompanied by mountain ranges. Breede River
The Breede River (), also known as Breë River, is a river in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Travelling inland north from the city of Cape Town, the river runs in a west to east direction. The surrounding western mountains formed the first continental divide experienced by European settlers in the 18th century. The Witels River and Dwars River become the Breë River. Sources The first catchment area of the river is in the Skurweberg mountain range close to Ceres. The head waters then runs through the modern day Michell's Pass before plaining out on its middle course in the Worcester area. The river mouth is in an estuary at Witsand on the Indian Ocean. Tributaries On its course through the Breede River Valley, it is joined by the Holsloot and Smalblaar Rivers, from their catchment areas, the Du Toitskloof and Stettyn mountain ranges. Rustenburg is the most populous city in North West (South African province), North West province, South Africa (549,575 in 2011 and 626,522 in the 2016 census). Elands River (North West)
The Elands River (, ) is located in the North West Province, South Africa. It is a tributary of the Crocodile River, part of the Limpopo River basin. Course The Elands River originates west of Koster, North West Province, flowing northwards across Swartruggens into the Lindleyspoort Dam. A few kilometers downstream from the dam wall it bends eastwards east of Silwerkrans and goes meandering in an ENE direction across the veld for many miles. Further east it flows right south of the Pilanesberg, barely 1.5 km from the outer perimeter of the ancient crater formation. The Elands continues flowing eastward to the Vaalkop Dam. Finally, about 5 km downstream, it joins the Crocodile River's left bank. The Hex River Mountains () make up the second highest mountain range in the Western Cape province of South Africa and are located north-east of Cape Town. They form part of a large anticline in the Cape Fold Belt mountain system and form a north-east, south-west trending mountain system forming the core of the Cape Syntaxis (geology), Syntaxis between the towns of Worcester, Western Cape, Worcester and De Doorns.
