Herrnhut
Herrnhut (; ; ; Upper Lusatian: ''Harrnhutt'', ''Harrnutt'') is a town of around 6,000 inhabitants in Upper Lusatia, in the district of Görlitz, in eastern Saxony, Germany. The town is mainly known as the place of origin of the community of the Moravian Church (established by Nicolas Ludwig, Count von Zinzendorf in 1722), and of the Moravian Stars (''Herrnhuter Sterne''). In 2016, the town was awarded the honorary title '' European City of the Reformation'' by the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe, and in 2024, Herrnhut was inscribed on the World Heritage List as part of the serial site "Moravian Church Settlements" (''Siedungen der Herrnhuter Brüdergemeinde'') alongside Christiansfeld (Denmark), Bethlehem (USA) and Gracehill (Northern Ireland). Moravian Church
The Moravian Church, or the Moravian Brethren ( or ), formally the (Latin: "Unity of the Brethren"), is one of the oldest Protestant denominations in Christianity, dating back to the Bohemian Reformation of the 15th century and the original Unity of the Brethren () founded in the Kingdom of Bohemia, sixty years before Martin Luther's Reformation. The church's heritage can be traced to 1457 and the Lands of the Bohemian Crown, which included Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, and previously the Hussite movement against several practices and doctrines of the Catholic Church. Zittau–Löbau Railway
The Zittau–Löbau railway is a line in the German state of Saxony, originally built and operated by the ''Löbau-Zittau Railway Company''. The line opened in 1848 and it was one of the oldest lines in Germany. Only part of the line is still in service. It starts at Zittau and originally ran via Oderwitz and Herrnhut to Löbau. History The ''Löbau-Zittau Railway Company'' () received a concession on 25 June 1845 to build a line from Löbau to Zittau. The line was opened on 10 June 1848. The line was initially also operated by the ''Löbau-Zittau Railway''. On 1 January 1871 the line was acquired by the Royal Saxon State Railways. At the end of May 1998, passenger services were abandoned between Zittau and Löbau via Herrnhut. Großhennersdorf
Großhennersdorf () is a village and a former municipality in Görlitz district, Saxony, Germany. Since 1 January 2011, it is part of the town Herrnhut. The Bundesstraße 178 connects Großhennersdorf with Löbau and Zittau. The town was founded in 1296. The town is best known perhaps as the home of Henriette Catharina von Gersdorff m.n. von Friesen, the widow of the Governor of Upper Lusatia, Nicolaus Baron von Gersdorf. Gracehill
Gracehill is a village in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It lies about 1.9 miles from Ballymena and is in the townland of Ballykennedy (from ). It is part of the Borough of Mid & East Antrim. The village is unique in Ireland as a Moravian planned settlement. The name Gracehill reflects the religious aspirations of the founders. There were also similarly named settlements in other countries, for example Gracehill in the United States. Gracehill was granted UNESCO World Heritage site status in 2024. Görlitz (district)
Görlitz district (; Upper Sorbian: ''Wokrjes Zhorjelc'' ; ) is a district ('' Kreis'') in Saxony, and the easternmost in Germany. It is named after its capital Görlitz. It borders (from the west and clockwise) the district of Bautzen, the state of Brandenburg, Poland and the Czech Republic. Oderwitz
Oderwitz (; from Slavic for 'rinse'; , ) is a Saxony, Saxon municipality in the district Görlitz (district), Görlitz in Upper Lusatia, Germany. It is located in the southeast of the Free State of Saxony near the border with the Czech Republic. Zittau Mountains
The Zittau Mountains (, ; ), formerly also called the Lusatian Ridge (''Lausitzer Kamm''; ''Łužiski česak''), refer to the German part of the Lusatian Mountains that straddle the Saxony, Saxon-Bohemian border in the extreme southeast of the German state of Saxony. Geography Location The Zittau Mountains lie in the extreme south of the district of Görlitz (district), Görlitz in Saxony.
