Heronvale (also known informally as Brisk Bay) is a coastal town in the Whitsunday Region, Queensland, Australia. It is within the locality of Bowen. Geography Heronvale is on the south-east coast of the locality of Bowen facing Brisk Bay () and Edgecumbe Bay (). History Edgecumbe Bay was named on 4 June 1770 by Lieutenant James Cook on HM Bark Endeavour after George Edgcumbe who had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy and, as a Rear Admiral, was Commander in Chief at Plymouth, England, from 1766 to 1770. Brisk Bay was named after HMS ''Brisk'' on service at the Australia Station from 1864 to 1968. The town was named on 1 November 1963 by the Queensland Place Names Board. Bowen is a coastal town and locality in the Whitsunday Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Bowen had a population of 10,377 people. The locality contains two other towns: * Heronvale () * Merinda (). The Abbot Point coal shipping port is also within the locality (). Geography Bowen is located on the north-east coast in North Queensland, at exactly twenty degrees south of the equator. Bowen is halfway between Townsville and Mackay, and by road from Brisbane. Bowen sits on a square peninsula, with the Coral Sea to the north, east, and south. To the south-east is Port Denison and Edgecumbe Bay. On the western side, where the peninsula connects with the mainland, the Don River's alluvial plain provides fertile soil that supports a prosperous farming industry. James Cook

Bowen State School
Bowen State School is a heritage-listed school at 29 Kennedy Street, Bowen, Whitsunday Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Robert Ferguson and the Department of Public Works (Queensland). It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 March 2013. History Bowen State School was established in 1865 on a large, central site within the town of Bowen. It comprises a variety of education buildings and landscape elements constructed and altered over a long period. It has been an important place of education for the Bowen community since its establishment. Port settlements were established along the Queensland coast to serve inland pastoral districts to their west. In 1859 a site for the (then) most northern settlement of Queensland was found on the excellent natural harbour, Port Denison, to service the growing Kennedy pastoral district. HMS Brisk (1851)
HMS ''Brisk'' was a 14-gun wooden-hulled screw sloop designed by the Committee of Reference as part of the 1847 program. She is considered an enlarged Rattler with the design approved in 1847.Winfield (2014), Chapter 12. She was ordered on 25 April 1847 from Woolwich Dockyard as a 10-gun sloop,Lyon & Winfield (2004), p. 213. but the guns were later increased due to the Russian War, to 14 guns by increasing the number of 32-pounder guns. George Edgcumbe, 1st Earl Of Mount Edgcumbe
Admiral George Edgcumbe, 1st Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, PC (3 March 1720 – 4 February 1795) was a British peer, naval officer and politician. Early life Edgcumbe was the second surviving son of Richard Edgcumbe, 1st Baron Edgcumbe and his wife Matilda, the only child of Sir Henry Furnese. He is thought to have been educated at Eton. Career In 1739, Edgcumbe was commissioned a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and in 1742 was promoted to be commander of the bomb vessel . In the course of 1743, he was appointed acting captain of the 20-gun , and was officially confirmed on 19 August 1744. He commanded her in the Mediterranean until 1745, when he was advanced to the 50-gun . HMS ''Endeavour'' was a British Royal Navy research vessel that Lieutenant James Cook commanded to Australia and New Zealand on his first voyage of discovery from 1768 to 1771.
