Hermitage–Whitney Historic District
The Hermitage–Whitney Historic District is a U.S. historic district. The Hermitage Artist Retreat is situated along Manasota Key, a barrier island on the shores of Englewood, Florida. Its nine-acre beachfront campus includes five historic buildings and three structures. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 2002. History Throughout its more than a century of life, the property at 6660 Manasota Key Road has served many different purposes in the surrounding community. Earliest settlers What is now a peaceful, beachside “escape-to-create” residence for global artists began as a simple homestead for a family of immigrants building a new life. In 1907, the land was purchased by Carl Johansen, a Swedish immigrant and sawmill owner. Johansen made a living for his family by rafting his lumber across Lemon Bay. Englewood, Florida
Englewood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Charlotte and Sarasota counties in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 20,800, up from 14,863 at the 2010 census. It is part of the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Archeological digs in what is now Englewood discovered ceramics belonging to both the Weeden Island culture and Safety Harbor culture. One of the earliest white settlers in the area was William Goff, who arrived by schooner from Tampa in 1878. He settled a piece of land a few miles south of where Englewood would be platted. On July 3, 1895, a post office was established in the area as well. The Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895, along with a bad freeze in 1896, led to the decimation of many local orange plants. Historic districts in the United States are designated historic districts recognizing a group of buildings, archaeological resources, or other properties as historically or architecturally significant. Buildings, structures, objects, and sites within a historic district are normally divided into two categories, Contributing property, contributing and non-contributing. Lemon Bay
Lemon Bay is a long, narrow and shallow body of water covering 8,000 acres in Charlotte County, Florida and Sarasota County, Florida. It is protected as the Lemon Bay Aquatic Preserve, designated in 1986. It is one of five Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserves. The bay is fed by one Gulf pass, Stump Pass, and seven tributaries and includes areas of mangrove, marsh grass, and seagrass.
