The Heriberto Gil Martínez Airport is an airport serving the municipality of Tulua in the Valle del Cauca Department of Colombia. The airport was formerly Farfan Airport, named after an unverified pre-Hispanic tribe. On 20 August 2004, it was renamed after Heriberto Gil Martínez, one of the first aviators in Colombia, who along with Camilo Daza founded the FAC. It has no commercial air services. Tuluá (), is a city located in the heart of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Heriberto Gil Martinez (24 November 1903 – May 21, 1933) was a Colombian soldier. Biography Martinez was born to Ramon Nonato Gil and Isabel Martínez de Gil. Camilo Daza
Camilo Daza Álvarez (June 25, 1898 – March 18, 1975) was a Colombian aviator. He was born in Pamplona, Norte de Santander, Pamplona, Colombia. In 1919, he became the first Colombian to Aviation, pilot an airplane, and is considered to be the founder of Colombian aviation. He held the rank of brigadier general in the Colombian Air Force (). The Camilo Daza International Airport in Cúcuta is named after him, and displays a statue honoring his contributions. Also, the air base serving Comando Aéreo de Transporte Militar (CATAM) is named in his honor. Early life Camilo Daza was born on June 25, 1898, and spent his childhood in Pamplona, Colombia. At the age of 8, he showed interest in aviation and attempted to fly by jumping off the roof of his father's hacienda, La Caldera, using a rack from a window. In radio navigation, a VOR/DME is a radio beacon that combines a VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) with a distance-measuring equipment (DME). The VOR allows the receiver to measure its Bearing (navigation), bearing to or from the beacon, while the DME provides the slant distance between the receiver and the station. Together, the two measurements allow the receiver to compute a position fix. The VOR system was first introduced in the 1930s, but did not enter significant commercial use until the early 1950s. It became much more practical with the introduction of low-cost Solid state (electronics), solid state receivers in the 1960s. DME was a modification of World War II-era navigation systems like Gee-H (navigation), Gee-H, and began development in 1946.
