Hercules is an unincorporated community in Taney County, in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. Hercules is located on Missouri Route 125, south of Bradleyville and just northeast of the Hercules Glades Wilderness protected area. The townsite is adjacent to Brushy Creek and within the Mark Twain National Forest. History A post office called Hercules was established in 1899, and remained in operation until 1935. Taney County, Missouri
Taney County is a county in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 56,066. Its county seat is Forsyth. It is included in the Branson Micropolitan Statistical Area. Taney County was officially organized on January 4, 1837, and named in honor of Roger Brooke Taney, the fifth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, best known for delivering the infamous majority opinion in '' Dred Scott v. Missouri Route 125
Route 125 runs between U.S. Route 65 at Fair Grove and the Arkansas state line, where it continues as Highway 125. After the road crosses into Marion County, Arkansas, the highway crosses Bull Shoals Lake via a free ferry. It is a two-lane road its entire length. Near Chadwick, the highway enters the Mark Twain National Forest and passes through this most of the way to Arkansas. It also overlaps U.S. Route 160 for several miles at Rueter. Bradleyville is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in northeastern Taney County, Missouri, Taney County, Missouri, United States. It is located at the intersection of Route 76 (Missouri), Route 76 and Route 125 (Missouri), Route 125 above the west bank of Beaver Creek (White River), Beaver Creek. Hercules Glades Wilderness
The Hercules Glades Wilderness is a wilderness area in Taney County in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The United States Congress designated it a wilderness in 1976, making it the oldest wilderness area in Missouri. It is one of eight wilderness areas in the Mark Twain National Forest and is within the Ava-Cassville-Willow Springs ranger district, about northeast of Branson, Missouri. Hercules Glades Wilderness derives its name from the open limestone glades (balds) that dot its landscape. The high points of Coy Bald and Pilot Knob stand 600 feet above Long Creek and offer splendid views of the drainage. Near the middle of the wilderness area is the main set of waterfalls, though Long Creek has several other smaller waterfalls and cascades along its path. Mark Twain National Forest
Mark Twain National Forest (MTNF) is a U.S. National Forest located in the southern half of Missouri, composed of nine disconnected parcels. MTNF was established on September 11, 1939. It is named for author Mark Twain, a Missouri native. The MTNF covers of which is public owned, of which are Wilderness, and National Scenic River area. MTNF spans 29 counties and represents 11% of all forested land in Missouri.
