Henry Brooke, 11th Baron Cobham (22 November 1564 – 24 January 1618 (Old Style and New Style dates, Old Style)/3 February 1618 (New Style), lord of the manor, lord of the Manor of Cobham, Kent, was an English peer who was implicated in the Main Plot against the rule of James I of England. Life The son of William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham, by second wife Frances Newton, Lady Cobham, Frances, daughter of Sir John Newton, he was educated at King's College, Cambridge. In 1597 he succeeded his father as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports under Elizabeth I of England, Queen Elizabeth. Shortly after the accession of James I, he was implicated in the "Main Plot, Treason of the Main" in 1603. Catherine Howard, Countess of Nottingham ( Carey; – 25 February 1603), was a cousin, lady-in-waiting, and close confidante of Elizabeth I of England. She was in attendance on the queen for 44 years. Lady Arbella Stuart (also Arabella, or Stewart; 1575 – 25 September 1615) was an English noblewoman who was considered a possible successor to Queen Elizabeth I of England. During the reign of King James VI and I (her first cousin), she married William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset, another claimant to the English throne, in secret. King James imprisoned William Seymour and placed her under house arrest. When she and her husband tried to escape England, she was captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London, where she died at age 39. William Clark (priest)
William Clark (died 1603) was an English Roman Catholic priest and conspirator. He is remembered for his involvement in a plan to kidnap King James I of England, made together with another Catholic priest William Watson in the Bye Plot. He was executed at Winchester on 29 November 1603. Life He received his education at the English College, Douai, where he arrived on 6 August 1587. Two years later he went to the English College, Rome, and was one of a group of eight priests sent from there on the English mission in April 1592. Clark took an active part in the Archpriest Controversy: he was one of the "appellants", the 33 priests who signed the appeal against George Blackwell dated from Wisbech Castle, 17 November 1600. William Watson (priest)
William Watson (c. 23 April 15599 December 1603) was an English Roman Catholic priest and conspirator, executed for treason. Life In 1586 Watson became a Roman Catholic priest in France, and during the concluding years of Elizabeth's reign he paid several visits to England; he was imprisoned and tortured more than once. He became prominent in the Archpriest Controversy as a champion of the secular priests in their dispute with the Jesuits, and in 1601 some writings by him on this question appeared which were answered by Robert Parsons. In September of that year he was resident at Fulham Palace, under the protection of Richard Bancroft. When Elizabeth died, Watson hastened to Scotland to assure James I of the loyalty of his party, and to forestall the Jesuits, who were suspected of intriguing with Spain. The Bye Plot of 1603 was a conspiracy, by Priesthood (Catholic Church), Roman Catholic priests and Puritans aiming at toleration, tolerance for their respective denominations, to kidnap the new English king, James I of England. Thomas Grey, 15th Baron Grey de Wilton (died 1614) was an English aristocrat, soldier and conspirator. He was convicted of involvement in the Bye Plot against James I of England. Early life The son of Arthur Grey, 14th Baron Grey of Wilton, by his second wife Jane Sibella Morison, daughter of Sir Richard Morison, he served in the fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588. John Oldcastle
Sir John Oldcastle (died 14 December 1417) was an English Lollard leader. From 1409 to 1413, he was summoned to parliament as Baron Cobham, in the right of his wife. Being a friend of Henry V, he long escaped prosecution for heresy. When convicted, he escaped from the Tower of London and then led a rebellion against the King. Eventually, he was captured and executed in London. He formed the basis for William Shakespeare's character John Falstaff, who was originally called John Oldcastle. Family Oldcastle's date of birth is unknown, although dubious and possibly apocryphal sources place it variously at 1360 or 1378, although 1370 is most likely closer to the truth. Sir John Falstaff is a fictional character who appears in three plays by William Shakespeare and is eulogised in a fourth.
