"Rose" is the first episode of the first series of the revived British science fiction television programme ''Doctor Who''. The episode was directed by Keith Boak and written by Russell T Davies, who was also one of three executive producers. It was first broadcast in the UK on BBC One on 26 March 2005. "Rose" was the first ''Doctor Who'' episode to air since the ''Doctor Who'' television film in 1996. In the episode, the London department store worker Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) gets caught in the middle of the alien time traveller the Doctor's (Christopher Eccleston) plot to prevent an invasion of the Earth by the Nestene Consciousness (voiced by Nicholas Briggs) and the Autons after the Doctor destroys Rose's workplace. The episode marked Eccleston's first appearance as the Doctor, succeeding several other actors who played the role, and Piper's debut as the Doctor's travelling companion Rose. Christopher Eccleston (; born 16 February 1964) is an English actor whose work has encompassed Hollywood blockbusters and arthouse films, television dramas, Shakespearean stage performances and science fiction, most notably the Ninth Doctor, ninth incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC series ''Doctor Who'' (2005). Julie Gardner
Julie Ann Gardner (born 4 June 1969) is a Welsh television producer. Her most prominent work has been serving as executive producer on the 2005 revival of ''Doctor Who'' and its spin-off shows '' Torchwood'' and '' The Sarah Jane Adventures''. She worked on ''Doctor Who'' from 2003 to 2009 before moving to Los Angeles to work at BBC Worldwide. In 2015, Gardner co-founded the production company Bad Wolf, best known for the BBC TV series ''His Dark Materials'', on which Gardner also serves as an executive producer. Early life Gardner was born in Neath and grew up in the Pont Walby area of Glynneath, where her parents ran a local shop. The long-running BBC science fiction television series ''Doctor Who'' has an extensive universe inhabited by a continuously expanding gallery of creatures and aliens. The series first aired on BBC in 1963 until its cancellation in 1989, with a television movie aired in 1996 in an unsuccessful attempt to revive the show . The show was successfully revived in 2005, and continues to air episodes. The series stars an extraterrestrial known as the Doctor, who is capable of changing their appearance when they die in a process known as regeneration.
