Helmi Sjöstrand
Helmi Gunhild Sjöstrand (1864–1957) was a Swedish-speaking Finnish painter. The daughter of the Swedish sculptor Carl Eneas Sjöstrand, she spent much of her life in Sweden. She was one of the artists who joined Victor Westerholm in the artists colony at Önningeby on the island of Åland. Carl Eneas Sjöstrand
Carl Eneas Sjöstrand (11 September 1828 – 14 February 1906) was a Swedish people, Swedish sculptor who worked for over 40 years in the Grand Duchy of Finland. Biography Sjöstrand was born at Stockholm, Sweden. He was the son of painter Carl Johan Sjöstrand (1789–1857) and his wife Johanna Sofia Morberg. He first trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts with Carl Gustaf Qvarnström (1810–1867). In the 1850s, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and as a private student with sculptor Herman Wilhelm Bissen (1798–1868). Sjöstrand first arrived in Finland in the autumn of 1856 where he worked on the statue of Henrik Gabriel Porthan (1739–1804) in Turku. After working in Stockholm in 1861–1862, in 1863 Sjöstrand was offered a position as instructor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki by Fredrik Cygnaeus (1807–1881). Victor Westerholm
Victor Axel Westerholm (4 January 1860 Turku – 19 November 1919 Turku) was a Finland, Finnish landscape painter, especially known for founding the Önningeby artists' colony. Biography Victor Axel Westerholm was born in Turku in 1860. He was the son of Viktor Westerholm, a ship's master, and Maria Westerholm (née Andersson). As a child he spent a lot of time at the island of Nagu in the Archipelago Sea, Finnish Archipelago. From 1869 to 1878 he studied at the Finnish Art Society's Drawing School in Turku, under Robert Wilhelm Ekman (1808–1873) and Thorsten Waenerberg (1846–1917); and as a young man he studied under Eugen Dücker (1841–1916) in Düsseldorf from 1878-1880. Önningeby
Önningeby is a village in Jomala Municipality on the Finnish island of Åland. It is located some 7 km (4 mi) northeast of Mariehamn. Önningeby has 214 inhabitants (2014). In the south of Önningeby, Lemström's canal separates the municipalities of Jomala and Lemland. In the late 19th century, Önningeby became popular with artists wishing to practice painting ''en plein air'', i.e in the open air rather than in their studios. The Önningeby artists colony was centred around the summer house bought by the Finnish landscape painter Victor Westerholm in 1884, and called by him Tomtebo. Since 1992, Ålands Konstmuseum (Åland's Art Museum) has presented a permanent exhibition of works by the artists who painted there. Elin Danielson
Elin Kleopatra Danielson-Gambogi (; 3 September 1861 – 31 December 1919) was a Finnish painter, best known for her realist works and portraits. Danielson-Gambogi was part of the first generation of Finnish women artists who received professional education in art, the so-called "painter sisters' generation". The group also included Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946), Helena Westermarck (1857-1938), and Maria Wiik (1853-1928). She was the first-born child of Karl Danielson and Rosa Amalia Danielson, who both came from families of officers and officials, a middle-class background.
