Hele, Devon
Hele is a village in Devon, England, lying about SSW of Bradninch and NNE of Exeter, on the River Culm. The village is home to a paper mill once belonging to the company Wiggins Teape, now part of the multinational company Purico Group. The Devon Valley Mill produces sausage casing paper and teabag paper under the "Crompton Paper" brand name. The mill site was originally that of a grist mill which was converted to a paper mill in 1762. It was here that John Dewdney produced the first glazed writing paper in England in the 1840s. He was also famously called upon to supply the paper for the catalogues of the Great Exhibition in 1851. Hele & Co (also known as Hele & Sons) were the main organ builders in the south west of England from 1865 to 2007.''The Freeman-Edmonds Directory of British Organ Builders''; by Andrew Freeman & Bernard Edmonds. 2002 History The company was founded by George Hele (1836–1919). Initially George concentrated on selling organs, pianos and harmoniums, but in 1865 he started work in Truro building his first instrument, an organ for Devoran Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. On 12 June 1859 at Stoke-Damerel he married Mary Ann Calvert (1835-1919). In 1870 he moved to Plymouth where the company was based until 2007. Sir Warwick Hele (1568 – 15 January 1626) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1597 and 1625. Origins Hele was the eldest son of John Hele (died 1608), a money-lender and MP and was a brother of John Hele (died 1605), also MP for Plympton Erle. Career He was a student of Inner Temple in 1581. In 1597 he was elected a Member of Parliament for Plymouth. He was treasurer with Gregory Sprint for maimed soldiers for Devon by 1600 and was a J.P. for Devon from about 1601. He was knighted in 1603. In 1605, he was elected an MP for Plympton Erle. He succeeded to the large local estates of his father in 1608. In 1614, he was elected MP for Plympton Erle again. Sampson Hele ( – ) of Gnaton and of Halwell, Devon, was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1614 and 1624. Early life Hele was born into the junior line of a minor gentry family which had settled in Devon since at least the twelfth century. He was the son of Walter Hele of Lewston, Devon and the former Elizabeth Strode, daughter of William Strode of Newnham, Devon. He matriculated at Broadgates Hall, Oxford on 6 May 1597, aged 15. Career Upon his father's death in 1609, he inherited around 850 acres, including three manors, most of which was located in the south-west of the county, near Plymouth and Plympton. In 1614, he was elected Member of Parliament for Plympton Erle on the interest of his cousin Sir Warwick Hele. A Royalist during the Civil War, he was appointed Sheriff of Devon for 1621, and then elected MP for Tavistock in 1624 on the interest of his brother-in-law, Sir Francis Glanville. Sir Ivor Henry Thomas Hele, CBE (13 June 1912 – 1 December 1993) was an Australian artist noted for portraiture. He was Australia's longest serving war artist and completed more commissioned works than anyone else in the history of Australian art. Henry Hele
Henry Hele (1688/89–1778) was an English physician, who became a substantial landowner in Wiltshire and Somerset. Origins Hele was the son of Richard Hele, of the Close, Salisbury, who in his will dated 1704, proved in 1706, described himself as a gentleman. At the time of his father's will, Henry Hele had two brothers, Richard (1688/89–1756), later a prebendary of Salisbury) and John, and two sisters, Amy and Susannah. The elder Richard's origins are obscure, although he may be connected to the two Richard Heales (father and son), who were identified as musicians in deeds of bastardy and settlement from the 1670s in the Salisbury City Council archives.
