History The locality was probably named after a large freehold estate called Headington Hill established by George Henry Davenport (1831–1881). The original Headington Hill is to the north-east of Oxford, England. Davenport's father, George Francis Davenport, would have known it well, as he was the brother of John Marriott Davenport, who lived in Davenport House at the summit of Headington Hill above Oxford. St Peter's Lutheran Church opened on Sunday 25 May 1902 on land donated by Johann Gottfried Paech. The timber church had a porch and a domed ceiling and was and high. The ''Darling Downs Gazette'' was a newspaper published from 1848 to 1922 in Drayton and Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia. History ''The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser'' was founded in 1858 by Arthur Sidney Lyon. The first issue of four pages was published on Thursday 10 June 1858 from ''Willow Cottage'', a wooden shanty, in Drayton. After two years, it was purchased by W. H. Byers. Later, William Henry Traill was the proprietor for a brief period. While Drayton, being established in 1842, was the first substantial settlement on the Darling Downs, by the 1860s it was clear that it would be overtaken by nearby Toowoomba in size and importance, leading to Byers relocating the Darling Downs Gazette to Toowoomba in 1861. Headington Hill
Headington Hill is a hill in the east of Oxford, England, in the suburb of Headington. The Headington Road goes up the hill leading out of the city. There are good views of the spires of Oxford from the hill, especially from the top of South Park. Between 1644 and 1646, Headington Hill was used by the Parliamentarian forces while besieging Oxford during the First English Civil War. Headington Hill Hall, built in 1824 for the Morrell family (local brewers), stands on the hill, and is now the home of Oxford Brookes University's School of Law. George Henry Davenport
George Henry Davenport (1831–1881) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life George Henry Davenport was born in Oxford, England on 30 October 1831, the son of George Francis Davenport and his wife (and cousin), Eliza (née Davenport). George Henry Davenport was educated at Edinburgh High School. Davenport's father selected land in South Australia in 1839. Two of Davenport's uncles, Robert Davenport and Samuel Davenport, also settled in South Australia. Circa 1850, George Henry Davenport followed his uncles to South Australia soon after leaving school.
