Hazelwood is a former incorporated town in Haywood County, North Carolina, that is currently a neighborhood of the town of Waynesville. History In 1893, businessman W. H. Cole moved to Haywood County, North Carolina to establish a sawmill on unoccupied land. A community grew around his mill which he dubbed Hazelwood. Haywood County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 62,089. The county seat and its largest community is Waynesville, North Carolina, Waynesville. Haywood County is part of the Waynesville, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The earliest inhabitants of the area eventually comprising Haywood County were Cherokee Native Americans. Their local population was severely impacted by a smallpox outbreak in 1715. Waynesville is the county seat of Haywood County, North Carolina, United States. It is the largest town in North Carolina west of Asheville.
