Havelock Town is a neighbourhood of Colombo, Sri Lanka, part of an area zoned as ''Colombo 5''. It is located approximately 6 kilometres south of Fort (Colombo), Fort, the central business district of Colombo. Havelock City, a mixed-used development in Havelock Town is to be the largest property development in Sri Lanka incorporating residential and commercial facilities. It is named after Arthur Havelock who served as the British governor of Ceylon from 1890 to 1895. Visakha Vidyalaya (, ) is a girls' school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is a National School managed by the central government providing primary and secondary education. History The school was established in 1917 by Celestina Dias as the Buddhist Girls College in a house called 'The Firs' in Turret Road, Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was the desire of Dias to train the school girls according to the Buddhist moral values and principles. In 1927 it moved to its present premises in Vajira Road, Colombo and was named Visakha Vidyalaya, after Visakha, a disciple of the Lord Buddha, by Lady Herbert Stanley the wife of the Governor of Ceylon at that time. Cinnamon Gardens ( ''Kurundu Vaththa'', ) is an affluent neighbourhood in Colombo, Sri Lanka located 3 kilometers south-east of Colombo's centre. Cinnamon Gardens is named for the former cinnamon plantation in this area. In the year 1789, there were of cinnamon trees in the gardens. Havelock Park
Havelock Park (, Tamil: ஹேவ்லாக் பூங்கா) is a multi-purpose stadium in Havelock Town, Colombo Sri Lanka. It is one of the oldest grounds in the country. The sporting complex is located in Havelock Town and is bordered by Havelock Road, Park Road and Isipathana Mawatha. Early history Havelock Park was established in 1901 to honour Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock (1844–1908), who was the 17th British Governor of Ceylon (1890–1895), by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). Havelock Park was originally in area but in 1905 the CMC purchased an additional for Rs 30,000. Edward Henry Pedris Grounds
Edward Henry Pedris Grounds (also known as Edward Henry Pedris Stadium or Pedris Grounds) is a multi-purpose stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Located in the northern portion of Havelock Park, it is currently used for football, rugby union and basketball matches. Named after the national hero, Captain Duenuge Edward Henry Pedris, it is managed by the Isipathana College. History The public park was created in 1901 to honour Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock, former British Governor of Ceylon, by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). The park became home to several sports clubs and the northern section of the park was developed by the CMC as a public sports ground and stadium. Since it was a public ground it was used as a venue for many political rallies over the years. Isipathanaramaya Temple
Isipathanaramaya Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Located in Havelock Town it was built in 1916 by Duenuge Disan Pedris, a wealthy merchant, in memory of his only son Henry Pedris who was executed by British officials for alleged incitement of racial riots in 1915, which were proven false. The temple was constructed on a property that Pedris had purchased in 1905. The murals in the temple were painted by Maligawe Sarlis(1880-1955) in 1920-21. The murals have been described as "exuberant, theatrical recastings of the traditional subjects of Buddhist temple art, in a vivid realist style".
