Havelock Nelson (writer)
Havelock Nelson (born May 6, 1964) is an American music journalist and the co-author of the 1992 book ''Bring the Noise: A Guide to Rap Music and Hip Hop Culture''. Nelson was Billboard magazine's first rap editor where he singled out KMD's sophomore album Black Bastards contending that its artwork and title were offensive. This eventually led to Elektra records shelving the project. Nelson has written stories and reviews for ''Entertainment Weekly'' and ''Rolling Stone'' magazine and has been a contributor to the Huffington Post. Nelson has contributed to ''Vibe's History of Hip Hop'' (Random House), and been quoted in ''The New York Times'', ''The Washington Post'', and ''People magazine''. He has also appeared twice on TV-One's '' Unsung,'' and will host the forthcoming ''In-Depth with Havelock Nelson'' which is currently in pre-production. ''Unsung'' is an hour-long music documentary program that airs on TV One which premiered on November 27, 2008. It uncovers the stories behind well-known R&B and hip-hop music artists, bands, or groups which were ranked on the ''Billboard'' music charts with a string of hits, only to have their career derailed by a major crisis that caused them to be essentially unappreciated by later generations of contemporary R&B and soul music listeners. The series is produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions. Reception After four seasons, ''Unsung'' won an NAACP Image Award in the "Outstanding Information Series or Special" category. Horrorcore
Horrorcore (also called shock rap, horror hip hop, horror rap, death hip hop, death rap, or murder rap) is a subgenre of hip hop music based on horror-themed and often darkly transgressive lyrical content and imagery. Its origins derived from certain hardcore hip hop and gangsta rap artists, such as the Geto Boys, who began to incorporate supernatural, the occult, and psychological horror themes into their lyrics. Other early originators and influences on the genre include Gravediggaz, Flatlinerz, Three 6 Mafia, Brotha Lynch Hung, Necro, and Kool Keith. Unlike most hardcore hip hop and gangster rap artists, horrorcore artists often push the violent content and imagery in their lyrics beyond the realm of realistic urban violence, to the point where the violent lyrics become gruesome, ghoulish, unsettling, or inspired by slasher films or splatter films. Paul Edward Huston (born April 2, 1967), better known by his stage name Prince Paul, is an American record producer, disc jockey and recording artist from Amityville, New York. Paul began his career as a DJ for Stetsasonic. He has worked on albums by Boogie Down Productions, Gravediggaz, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane and 3rd Bass, among others. Major recognition for Prince Paul came when he produced De La Soul's debut album '' 3 Feet High and Rising'' (1989), in which he pioneered new approaches to hip hop production, mixing and sampling, notably by including comedy sketches. His first solo album, '' Psychoanalysis: What Is It?'', came out in 1997, followed by a second album, '' A Prince Among Thieves'', in 1999.
