Haukur Angantýsson
Haukur Angantýsson (2 December 1948 – 4 May 2012) was an Icelandic chess International Master. He was awarded the International Master title by FIDE in 1981. Haukur won the Icelandic Chess Championship in 1976. Graduating from Reykjavík High School in 1968, Haukur completed his studies in chemistry from Georg August Universität in Göttingen, Germany, in 1973. He took a ship's captain's certificate from Reykjavík Naval Academy in 1975. Haukur worked in various and very diverse jobs throughout his life, including research in the fields of chemistry, teaching, seafaring, both domestically and abroad, and net making. Flateyri
Flateyri ( Icelandic: ) is a village situated in Iceland's Westfjords. It is part of the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær and has a population of approximately 200, making it the largest settlement in Önundarfjörður. History Flateyri has been a trading post since 1792 and temporarily became a major whaling center in the 19th century. On October 26, 1995, an avalanche hit the village, destroying 29 homes and burying 45 people, which resulted in 20 fatalities. Since then a deflecting dam has been built to protect the village from any further avalanches. In the 1990s, Flateyri prospered as a fishing village, but after the 2008–2011 financial crisis hit, its main fishing companies shut down, and many people left. A German fishing company has set up base in Flateyri and is currently fishing in and just out of Önundarfjörður. Florin Gheorghiu
Florin Gheorghiu (born 6 April 1944) is a Romanian Chess, chess player and has been a university lecturer in foreign languages. Born in Ploiești, on 6 April 1944, while the American bombers Bombing of Bucharest in World War II, attacked the country's capital, his prodigious talent for the game was evidenced by his many early achievements; he became an International Master in 1963 and Romania's first Grandmaster (chess), Grandmaster just two years later. He earned the title of World Junior Chess Championship, World Junior Champion in 1963, at Vrnjacka Banja, and has been the national champion of Romania on nine occasions. Gheorghiu was a lecturer in French at the University of Bucharest and he also speaks English, Russian, German, and Spanish. John Fedorowicz
John Peter Fedorowicz (born September 27, 1958) is an American chess player, coach, and writer from The Bronx, New York. Chess career Fedorowicz learned to play chess in 1972, inspired by the Fischer–Spassky World Championship Match coverage on TV and as an enthusiastic youngster, made rapid progress to become co-winner of the 1977 U.S. Junior Championship (with Kenneth W. Regan) and outright winner in 1978. Fedorowicz continued to impress and in 1984 tied for third place in the U.S. Championships, tied for second place at Hastings in 1984–85, and tied for second place at Dortmund in 1986. He represented the U.S. at the 1986 Dubai Chess Olympiad and scored well, earning himself the Grandmaster (GM) title the same year. Bernard Zuckerman
Bernard Zuckerman (born March 31, 1943) is an International Master of chess. Zuckerman competed in seven U.S. Chess Championships (1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1977 and 1978), his best result being a tie for fourth place with William Addison in 1965. He served as a member of the U.S. team in the World Student Team Championships of 1964, 1967 and 1969. At Brooklyn College, Zuckerman was a prominent player, along with Raymond Weinstein, on its national champion college chess team. Arthur Bisguier
Arthur Bernard Bisguier (October 8, 1929April 5, 2017) was an American chess player, chess promoter, and writer who held the FIDE title of Grandmaster (GM). Bisguier won two U.S. Junior Championships (1948, 1949), three U.S. Open Chess Championship titles (1950, 1956, 1959), and the 1954 United States Chess Championship title. He played for the United States in five chess Olympiads. He also played in two Interzonal tournaments (1955, 1962). On March 18, 2005, the United States Chess Federation (USCF) proclaimed him "Dean of American Chess." Early years Bisguier was born in a Jewish family in New York City and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science. Walter Browne
Walter Shawn Browne (10 January 1949 – 24 June 2015) was an Australian-born American chess and poker player. Awarded the title Grandmaster (GM) by FIDE in 1970, he won the U.S. Chess Championship six times. Early years Browne was born to an American father and an Australian mother in Sydney. His family moved to the New York area when he was age 3. Browne moved to California in 1973. Browne won the U.S. Junior Championship in 1966. Browne had dual Australian and American citizenship until he was 21, and represented Australia for a short time. He won the 1969 Australian Chess Championship. He tied first with Renato Naranja while representing Australia at the 1969 Asian Zonal tournament in Singapore, earning the International Master title, though Naranja qualified for the 1970 Interzonal on tie breaks. World Open Chess Tournament
The World Open is an annual open chess tournament usually held in Philadelphia. The inaugural event was held in New York in 1973 with 732 players, and was won by Walter Browne. The tournament is divided into different sections, with typically 100–200 players in the top section. The 1986 edition had as many as 1507 participants, arguably a world record for a chess tournament. It is usually played in the first week of July, over Independence Day Weekend. All editions have been organized by the ''Continental Chess Association''.
