Hatfield is a census-designated place (CDP) comprising the main village in the town of Hatfield in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population of the CDP was 1,318 at the 2010 census, out of a total town population of 3,279. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography The Hatfield CDP is located in the southern part of the town of Hatfield at (42.369665, -72.605426). The CDP includes the village of Hatfield, on the west bank of the Connecticut River, as well as residential land to the west along Elm Street as far as Dwight Street and Little Neponset Road and to the north as far as Cow Bridge Brook. Interstate 91 passes west of the center of Hatfield, with access from Exit 21 at Elm Street. The CDP is northeast of the center of Northampton and north of Springfield. HM Prison Hatfield (formerly HMP & YOI Moorland Open) is a Category D men's prison and Young Offenders Institution, located near Hatfield Woodhouse in South Yorkshire, England. The prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. History In August 2006, a report from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons stated that both Moorland and HMP & YOI Hatfield Prisons were well managed, and provided a safe and respectful environment for inmates and staff. However the report also claimed that more than a third of prisoners were unoccupied at HMP & YOI Hatfield, with a lengthy waiting list of inmates wanting to join education classes. Weeks later, it was revealed that in a three-year period 190 inmates had escaped from HMP & YOI Hatfield. The Prison Service did not have statistics on how many of these inmates had been recaptured, but claimed that "most would have been returned to a closed prison at some point." Hatfield College is one of the constituent colleges of Durham University in England. It occupies a city centre site above the River Wear on the World Heritage Site peninsula, lying adjacent to North Bailey and only a short distance from Durham Cathedral. Taking its name from a medieval Prince-Bishop of Durham, the college was founded in 1846 as Bishop Hatfield's Hall by David Melville, a former Oxford don. Melville disliked the 'rich living' of patrician undergraduates at University College, and hoped to nurture a collegiate experience that would be affordable to those of limited means; and in which the students and staff were to be regarded as part of a single community. Hatfield Aerodrome was a private airfield and aircraft factory located in the English town of Hatfield in Hertfordshire from 1930 until its closure and redevelopment in the 1990s. Early history Geoffrey de Havilland, pioneering aircraft designer and founder of the de Havilland Aircraft Company purchased some farmland close to Hatfield as his existing site at Stag Lane, Edgware was being encroached upon by expanding housing developments in the London suburbs. Flying commenced in 1930, but the clubhouse buildings and adjacent recreational facilities, fuel pumps and sheds were not completed until 1933. Hatfield is a metrorail station on the Gautrain rapid transit system in the suburb of Hatfield in Pretoria, Gauteng. It was opened on 2 August 2011 as part of the second phase of the Gautrain project. Location The above- and underground station area is located east of the centre of Pretoria between Grosvenor Street and Jan Shoba Street ( M7). The Hatfield station forms the northern terminus on the north–south route of the Gautrain and allows passengers to pass to the PRASA rail network.
