Harrisburg Senators (1893–1952)
The Harrisburg Senators was originally a name given to several minor league baseball clubs between 1893 and 1952. The name is also currently used by the modern-day team in the Double-A Eastern League, since 1987. History Early teams The first Senators teams can be traced to the Pennsylvania State League, where the team played as the Harrisburg Hustlers, before taking on the Senators name the following year. In 1900, the city fielded a team in the Atlantic League for one season. In 1911, the team was called the Harrisburg Ponies. In 1912, Harrisburg won the first of three Tri-State League championships. In 1915, the Newark Indians of the International League team moved to Harrisburg. The club lasted one year before moving to the New York State League and playing as the Harrisburg Islanders before disbanding in 1917. Interstate League
The Interstate League was the name of five different American minor baseball leagues that played intermittently from 1896 through 1952. Nig Clarke
Jay Justin "Nig" Clarke (December 15, 1882 – June 15, 1949) was a Canadian professional baseball player. A catcher, Clarke played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for nine seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Naps, St. Louis Browns, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates. In 506 career games, Clarke recorded a batting average of .254 and accumulated 20 triples, six home runs, and 127 runs batted in (RBI). Born in Canada and raised in Michigan, Clarke began his baseball career in 1902, when he reportedly hit eight home runs in one game while playing for the Corsicana Oil Citys of the Texas League. From there, he spent two more seasons in the minor leagues before the Cleveland Naps signed him to a contract. Aside from a loan to the Detroit Tigers, he played for the Naps for six seasons. Glenn Killinger
William Glenn Killinger (September 13, 1898July 25, 1988) was an American football, basketball, and baseball player, coach, and college athletics administrator from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated Harrisburg Technical High School and then lettered in three sports at Pennsylvania State University, where he was an 1921 College Football All-America Team, All-American in football in 1921. Killinger then played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Canton Bulldogs and the New York Giants and for Philadelphia Quakers (AFL), Philadelphia Quakers of the American Football League (1926), first American Football League in 1926. Steve Yerkes
Stephen Douglas Yerkes (May 15, 1888 – January 31, 1971) was a professional baseball player. Formative years and baseball career Yerkes was born in Hatboro, Pennsylvania on May 15, 1888. During his early twenties, he played all or part of seven seasons in Major League Baseball. Primarily a second baseman between 1909 and 1916, he played for the Boston Red Sox (1909, 1911–14), of the American League, the Pittsburgh Rebels (1914–15) of the Federal League, and the Chicago Cubs (1916) of the National League. He played in the first game at Boston's Fenway Park, on April 20, 1912, during which he had five hits, including two doubles. In the 1912 World Series, he drove in the winning run for the Red Sox in Game One, and scored the Series-winning run in the tenth inning of Game Eight. Yerkes batted and threw right-handed. Walter Blair (baseball)
Walter Allen Blair (October 13, 1883 – August 20, 1948), nicknamed "Heavy", was an American catcher in Major League Baseball player born in Landrus, Pennsylvania who, after attending Bucknell University, played as a backup catcher for the New York Highlanders from through . He later got his chance to play regularly when played for the Buffalo Buffeds/Blues of the Federal League during their only two seasons in and . It was for this team that he did appear as manager for two games, a doubleheader played on June 4, 1915, his team won one and lost one. Following his playing career he served as a baseball coach at the University of Pittsburgh and Bucknell University. He was inducted into the Bucknell Hall of Fame in 1987. Walter died at the age of 64 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and was buried at the Lewisburg City Cemetery. George Cockill
George W. Cockill (June 28, 1881 – November 2, 1937) was an American football, baseball, and basketball player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania in 1914. William Robert Hamilton (February 16, 1866 – December 15, 1940), nicknamed "Sliding Billy", was an American professional baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) during the 19th-century. He played for the Kansas City Cowboys, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Beaneaters between 1888 and 1901. Hamilton won the National League (NL) batting title twice and led the NL in stolen bases five times, eclipsing 100 on four occasions. He hit over .400 in 1894 and set the major league record for runs scored in a season with 198. His 914 stolen bases ranks third all time behind only Rickey Henderson, at 1,406 and Lou Brock with 938 .
