Harri Pälviranta
Harri Pälviranta (born 1971 in Tampere, Finland) is a visual artist who uses mostly photography but also moving images and archival approach. Pälviranta is also a researcher, who specializes in photography studies and theories of documentary. Career Pälviranta started his academic studies in 1993 at the Tampere University, majoring in political sciences. In 1996, he moved to Turku to study photography at the Turku Arts Academy and received his BFA in 2000. In 2002, he started studying media studies at the University of Turku, receiving MA in 2005. In 2007 he moved to Helsinki to work on his doctoral thesis at the Aalto University, and he successfully defended the thesis (''EXPERIENCING REALITY IN AN ART EXHIBITION. Encountering violence-related documentary photography in a gallery context'') in 2012, earning a Doctor of Arts degree. Tampere University (, shortened TAU) is a multidisclipinary public university located in the city of Tampere, Finland. It is the second largest university in the country by student enrollment. The Centro de Fotografía Isla de Tenerife (''Photo Center Tenerife Island'') is a museum dedicated to photography located in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain) which was opened in 1989. The museum moved under the control of TEA (Tenerife Espacio de las Artes) in 2008. History The museum was opened on 30 November 1989 by the Cabildo de Tenerife, with a goal to “promote aspects of artistic creation with enormous potential for contemporary expression, and to rescue and preserve our own heritage of images, which still remains dispersed and lacks sufficient preservation". Collections They hold two separate photograph collections, one of documentary photography, and one of artistic photography, in over 20,000 m² of exhibition space.
