Hanwell, New Brunswick
Hanwell is an incorporated rural community and former local service district within Kingsclear Parish in York County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is located on Route 640 immediately southwest of Fredericton. On 1 January 2023, Hanwell annexed the northern part the local service district of the parish of Kingsclear, including the communities of French Village, Island View, and Mazerolle Settlement; the annexed communities' names remain in official use. Revised census figures have not been released. History Hanwell was named by Thomas Baillie, who was born at Hanwell, West London, England. Baillie brought Irish immigrants over to settle in the area in 1825. Originally a local service district (LSD) and a farming community, two residential subdivisions were constructed in Hanwell in the 1970s. While they no longer serve as a local government territorial division as traditionally defined with shire towns or county towns, they continue to define a regional community. York County (2016 population 99,411) is located in west-central New Brunswick, Canada. The county contains the provincial capital, Fredericton. Outside the city, farming and forestry are two major industries in the county, which is bisected by the Saint John River. The Southwest Miramichi River flows through the northern section of the county. History York County was established in 1785, named after the second son of King George III, Prince Frederick-Augustus (1763-1827), who was made Duke of York in 1784. LSDs relate to areas of the province's former county municipalities that were not incorporated as municipalities around centres of population. Kingsclear Parish, New Brunswick
Kingsclear is a civil parish in York County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the city of Fredericton, the Indian reserve of Kingsclear 6, the incorporated rural community of Hanwell, and the local service district of the parish of Kingsclear, all of which except the Indian reserve are members of Regional Service Commission 11 (RSC11). The LSD includes the special service area of Oswald Gray. Origin of name The parish's name may be a shortening of King's Clearing, a reference to early clearing of forests in the area. Route 640 is a long mostly north–south secondary highway in the southwestern portion of New Brunswick, Canada. Most of the route is in Prince William Parish. The route starts at Route 102 in Fredericton where it is known as ''Hanwell Road''. It passes Odell Park and travels southwest to exit 3 on Route 8. The road then travels across Route 2 at exit 281 as it enters Hanwell. The route passes The Hanwell Recreational Park. Mazzerolle Settlement Road provides access between Route 640 and Route 2 (at exit 271) and access to Kingsclear. The route passes Yoho Lake as it enters Yoho, and it then crosses a branch of Jewetts Cove before entering Hurley Corner.
