Hannibal is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in eastern Ohio Township, Monroe County, Ohio, United States. It has a post office with the ZIP code 43931. In the 2020 Census, it had a population of 314, down from 411 in 2010. Hannibal was originally called "Baresville", named for the founder Jacob Bare. A post office called Hannibal was opened and the town's name was soon changed to match. Hannibal is served by the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District and is home to the K-12 building that houses both River Elementary School and River High School. Geography Hannibal lies along Ohio State Route 7, near an intersection with Ohio State Route 536. It is located along the Ohio River, and is home to the Hannibal Locks and Dam. Sardis is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in southeastern Lee Township, Monroe County, Ohio, United States. It has a post office with the ZIP code of 43946. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 522. Among the early settlers in this area was Major Earl Sproat, one of the 48 members of the Ohio Company. The Ohio Company founded Marietta, the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory in 1788. The village of Sardis was laid out by James Patton in 1843. Clarington, Ohio
Clarington is a village in Monroe County, Ohio, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 280 at the 2020 census. History Clarington was described in 1833 as having two stores, one tavern, one physician and ten residential houses. According to Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, "It was laid out in 1822 by David Pierson, who named it after his daughter Clarinda." During the mid-1800s, Clarington grew considerably and soon was a booming river port town with nearly 1,500 residents. The village boasted a cigar factory, blacksmith shop, restaurants, lodgings, and employed many residents at the local boat yard. Mozena Brothers Boat Yard designed and built many western river steam "packet-boats" on site in Clarington near the mouth of Sunfish Creek. Most famous of these boats was the 1912 built Liberty. Hannibal Locks And Dam
The Hannibal Locks and Dam are a United States Army Corps of Engineers concrete locks and lift gate dam, located at river mile marker 126.4 on the Ohio River at Hannibal, Ohio and New Martinsville, West Virginia. The locks and dam were built to replace the wicket-type locks and dams Number 12, 13 and 14. Construction on the locks was started in 1967 and completed in 1972. Construction on the dams was started in 1970 and completed in 1975. A 37.4 MW hydroelectric power plant is located on the left descending bank of the Ohio River at New Martinsville, West Virginia, abutted to the dam. The power plant is owned and operated by the City of New Martinsville.
