Hammond, Montana
Hammond is an unincorporated community in Carter County, Montana, United States. It is located approximately southeast of the town of Broadus along U.S. Highway 212. Its elevation is 3,711 feet. History The town began with a store and gas station during the construction of US 212 in the 1930s. In the 21st century, Hammond has consisted only of an active post office and a rancher's home. Three other buildings along the highway are abandoned and deteriorated beyond use. Hammond is located in the southeast corner of the state, near the Montana-Wyoming border between the unincorporated communities of Boyes and Alzada in Carter County. Hammond is southwest of the Carter County seat, Ekalaka. The area around Hammond is mostly ranchland. Broadus, Montana
Broadus is a town in and the county seat of Powder River County, Montana, United States. The population was 456 at the 2020 census. History American Indian Wars The Powder River Battles, part of the Powder River Expedition of 1865, were fought near the present-day town from September 1–15, 1865, by the U.S. Army against Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors. On March 17, 1876, the Battle of Powder River occurred about southwest of present-day Broadus, and on June 13, 1876, six companies of the 7th Cavalry led by Major Marcus Reno marched along the Powder River to within north of the town's present location before turning west toward the Little Bighorn. Town The Broadus post office was established in 1900, and named after the Broaddus family, early settlers in the area. Alzada (also known as Stoneville and Telegraph Point) is a census-designated place in southern Carter County, Montana, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 29. It is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 212 with Montana Secondary Highways 323 and 326, near the Wyoming and South Dakota borders. The Little Missouri River flows northwards to the west of the community. Alzada is in the Mountain Time Zone. History Alzada was first established in 1878, by 9th U.S. Infantry soldiers as Camp Devin, on the Deadwood, Dakota Territory to Fort Keogh, Montana Territory telegraph line.
