Hammil, California
Hammil is an unincorporated community in Mono County, California. It is located west-northwest of White Mountain Peak, at an elevation of 4593 feet (1400 m). The Hammil brothers (William, Hugh, and Robert) homesteaded at the site in 1870. The Carson and Colorado Railroad The Carson and Colorado Railway was a U.S. narrow gauge railroad that ran from Mound House, Nevada, to Keeler, California below the Cerro Gordo Mines. It was incorporated on May 10, 1880 as the Carson and Colorado ''Railroad'', and constructio ... arrived in 1883 and named the settlement after them. Hammil's postal service was handled by the Mocalno, which operated from 1915 to 1937. Mocalno was named by adding "cal" for California in the Mono (the county's name). Mono County ( ) is a county located in the east central portion of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,195, making it the fourth-least populous county in California. The county seat is Bridgeport. White Mountain Peak
White Mountain Peak (or simply White Mountain), at , is the highest peak in the White Mountains of California, the highest peak in Mono County, and the third highest peak in the state after Mount Whitney and Mount Williamson. It is the fourteenth most topographically prominent peak in the contiguous United States. White Mountain Peak is one of only two fourteeners (peaks above 14,000 feet) in California that are not in the Sierra Nevada, the other being Mount Shasta at the far northern end of the state in the Cascade Range. Carson And Colorado Railroad
The Carson and Colorado Railway was a U.S. narrow gauge railroad that ran from Mound House, Nevada, to Keeler, California below the Cerro Gordo Mines. It was incorporated on May 10, 1880 as the Carson and Colorado ''Railroad'', and construction on the railroad began on May 31, 1880. The narrow gauge track was chosen to reduce cost. Much of the route now parallels U.S. Route 95 Alternate, U.S. Route 95, Nevada State Route 360, U.S. Route 6, and U.S. Route 395. The Carson and Colorado began operations with a single Baldwin , the ''Candelaria''. The first train arrived at Keeler on August 1, 1883. The route reached an altitude of in Montgomery Pass.
