Hagansport, Texas
Hagansport is an unincorporated community in Franklin County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 40 in 2000. History The name derives from an early settler by the name of Hagan, who established a crossing on the Sulphur River. Hagan's Port eventually became one word, Hagansport. This was the spelling of the name by the time the first post office was established in 1857. F.M. Sims was the postmaster. The community grew to around 150 by the 1880s and had a post office, gin, sawmill, and other businesses. The population has gradually declined since then, resulting in the closing of the post office, which reopened in 1876, but then closed permanently in 1929. The community had a sawmill, two churches, four businesses, and 125 residents in the 1930s. It then had three churches, only one business, and a population of 40 in 1985. Sulphur River
The Sulphur River is a river in northeast Texas and southwest Arkansas in the United States. It is a tributary of the Red River. Geography The Sulphur River begins at the confluence of its north and south forks forming (following earlier meanders) the northern and southern boundaries of, and meeting at the eastern end of, Delta County (Texas). This is about northeast of the town of Sulphur Bluff, northeast of Dallas, and downstream (air miles) along the south fork from the Cooper Lake dam. The river flows generally eastward through several Texas counties. Tributaries include Shawnee Creek and Brevelle Lake. The Köppen climate classification divides Earth climates into five main climate groups, with each group being divided based on patterns of seasonal precipitation and temperature. Mount Vernon is a town and the county seat of Franklin County, Texas, Franklin County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,491 at the 2020 United States census. History Mount Vernon started as a settlement near the Fanning Springs (on Holbrook Street south of the present town square). Affidavits filed to establish land titles soon after the Texas Revolution document the settlement by squatters in Spanish Texas commencing in 1818. By 1848 the United States government established a post office, and in 1849 a formal town site was laid out on land donated by Stephen and Rebecca Keith for the town of Mount Vernon. Since there were two other Mount Vernons in Texas, the post office was called "Keith" and then "Lone Star" before the name "Mount Vernon" became available in 1875. State Highway 37 is a state highway that runs from US 69 in Mineola to the Oklahoma state line in the northeast corner of the state. History SH 37 was designated as a route on April 13, 1918 from Clarksville to Lufkin. On August 21, 1923, it was pared back, with everything north of Mt. Vernon either cancelled or transferred to the new SH 66, and the portion from Jacksonville to Lufkin transferred to SH 40. On May 23, 1927, it was extended north to Talco. On June 24, 1931, it was extended north to the Oklahoma state line, replacing SH 66. On July 15, 1935, everything north of Clarksville was cancelled. The section north of Clarksville was restored on December 20, 1937. It was founded in Austin, Texas, United States, on March 2, 1897. In November 2008, the TSHA moved its offices from Austin to the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. In 2015, the offices were relocated again to the University of Texas at Austin.
