Haapaniemi (Jyväskylä)
Haapaniemi is a district in the city of Kuopio, Finland. It is located south of downtown, about a mile from the Kuopio Market Square, market square. The district has a population of about 4,000. The northern end of Saaristokatu, which runs to the archipelago city, leads to Haapaniemi, as does the southern ramp leading to the center of the Finnish national road 5, motorway. A villa district was designed in the area in an architectural competition held in 1899, which was won by architect Lars Sonck for Haapaniemi. On the basis of the competition entries, a draft town plan was prepared for the area, which was followed. However, the entry of industrial plants into the area in the early 20th century buried the idea of a villa district and housing was created for the working population in the area. Kuopio Market Square
Kuopio Market Square () is the market square in the Multimäki district in Kuopio, North Savonia, Finland. The market is located about one hundred meters above sea level and the size of the area is 130×174 meters. The cover is made of dice and nubile stone. In the east–west direction, the area is crossed by flat walkways. As a surface, the market is slightly sloping, which poses challenges for use. The structure rests on a 10–15 m deep sand mattress, under which there is a ridge formation starting from Väinölänniemi, which runs under the church towards Puijo. Tulliportinkatu runs along the edges of the square in the north, Puijonkatu in the east, Kauppakatu in the south and Haapaniemenkatu in the west. Lars Sonck
Lars Eliel Sonck (10 August 1870 – 14 March 1956) was a Finnish architect. He was a prominent figure in early 20th-century Finnish architecture, known for his role in developing the National Romantic and later Nordic Classicism movements in Finland. Sonck graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Helsinki (now Aalto University) in 1894. That same year, at age 23, he won the design competition for St Michael's Church, Turku, marking his professional breakthrough. While the church was designed in the Neo-Gothic style, Sonck’s later work evolved through Art Nouveau, National Romanticism, and ultimately Nordic Classicism during the 1920s. Kuopio University Hospital (KUH; , ) is a teaching hospital of the University of Eastern Finland along Puijonlaaksontie at the Puijonlaakso district in Kuopio, Finland.
