Latvijas Berzs Riga is an ice hockey team in Riga, Latvia. They play in the Latvian Hockey League, and formerly played in the Pervaya Liga. History In the early 1960s was in the furniture manufacturing company, Latvijas Bērzs (today Latvijas Finieris), founded an ice hockey team. They participated first participated the Latvian SSR Championship in 1962. They won the Latvian Championship ten times in the 1970s and 1980s The club played in the Vtoraya Liga from 1974-1978, but were promoted to the Pervaya Liga for two years (1979 and 1980) before they were again relegated to the Vtoraya Liga. After the Soviet Union broke up, the club participated in the now professional Latvian Hockey League. They won the league title in 1997. Latvian Hockey League
The Latvian Hockey Higher League (), also known as the Optibet Hockey League () since 2017 due to sponsorship by Optibet, is the top tier league of ice hockey in Latvia. The league is competed by nine teams from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Previously it was also known as the Latvian Open Hockey Championships (''Latvijas atklātais čempionāts hokejā'') and the Samsung Premier League (''Samsung Premjerlīga'') from 2006 to 2008. The league was established in 1931. HK Liepājas Metalurgs, which played in the league between 1999 and 2013, has been the most successful team of the tournament, having won seven titles. The All-Russian Hockey League B or VHL-B (, ''Pervenstvo Vserossiyskoy hokkeynoy ligi'') is an ice hockey league in Russia. It stands at the third-tier of the Russian ice hockey pyramid, below the second-level VHL and the top-tier KHL. History Since 1992, it was the First League of the Russian Ice Hockey Championship. Artūrs Irbe
Artūrs Irbe (born 2 February 1967) is a Latvian professional ice hockey coach and former goaltender. Born during the Soviet era, Irbe played for various Soviet league teams and the Soviet Union national team before moving to North America in 1991. Irbe played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks, and Carolina Hurricanes. In 2004 Irbe returned to Europe to play until he retired in 2007. He has served as a goaltending coach with Dinamo Riga, the Washington Capitals, and the Buffalo Sabres, as well as internationally with the Latvia men's national ice hockey team. He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2010. Irbe was rated number 93 on ''The Hockey News'' list of the Top 100 Goalies of All-Time in 2018. Mārtiņš Karsums (born 26 February 1986) is a Latvian professional ice hockey right winger currently playing for MHk 32 Liptovský Mikuláš of the Slovak Extraliga. Karsums was selected in the second round, 64th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. He has played in the National Hockey League for the Bruins and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Oskars Bārtulis (; born 21 January, 1987) is a Latvian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played parts of two seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Philadelphia Flyers. In 2018, Bartulis became a Russian citizen and initially ineligible to play for Latvia at national level. Ģirts Ankipāns (born 29 November 1975) is a retired Latvian ice hockey player and coach. Currently he serves as the head coach of Dinamo Riga in KHL. Career Playing career He started his professional ice hockey career in Latvia, where he played for various local teams. Guntis Galviņš (born January 25, 1986) is a Latvian former professional ice-hockey defenceman, who played in the European leagues.
