Gruta Do Lago Azul Natural Monument
Gruta do Lago Azul Natural Monument (Blue Lake Cave) is a Natural monument (Brazil), natural monument in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. It holds two caves with interesting but fragile calcareous formations, and has been listed as a protected area since 1978. Description The Gruta do Lago Azul has a main hall with a floor that slopes to a subterranean lake over long. The entrance is circular, about in diameter, illuminating the lake with sunshine. Between the months of September and February the waters take on an intense blue color, for which the lake is named. Fossil bones have been found of large mammals that inhabited the region for more than 12,000 years in the Pleistocene. These include giant sloths, armadillos and sabre-toothed tigers. Bonito is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. As of 2020 its population was 22,190, and it has an area of . History The area that would become the center of the Municipality of Bonito started with the land of the Rincão Bonito Fazenda, which had an area of and was acquired by Euzébio Captain Luiz da Costa Leite Falcão in 1869. He is considered the pioneer of Bonito, and was also its first registrar and public notary.
