Gries Pass
Gries Pass (2469 m.) (Italian: ''Passo del Gries'', German: ''Griespass'') is a mountain pass between Valais, Switzerland and Formazza, Italy. There is no road over the pass, from Nufenen Pass the paved road ends and a bridle path leads over to the Italian side. A high pressure gas pipeline runs over the pass, coming from the North Sea to Italy. Transitgas Pipeline
The Transitgas Pipeline is a long natural gas pipeline in Switzerland, which connects Trans Europa Naturgas Pipeline (TENP) from Wallbach at the German border and Gaz de France gas grid from Rodersdorf/ Oltingue at the French border with the Snam Rete Gas S.p.A. owned gas grid in Gries Pass, Italy. History The company owning the pipeline, Transitgas AG, was established in Zurich on 25 June 1971. The first stage of pipeline between Wallbach and Ruswil came on stream in April 1974. In 1994, the second pipe was laid between Wallbach and Lostorf. Between 1998 and 2003, the pipeline was extended to Italy and a compressor station was built in Ruswil. Nufenen Pass
Nufenen Pass (Italian: ''Passo della Novena'', German: ''Nufenenpass'') (el. 2478 m.) is the highest mountain pass with a paved road within Switzerland. It lies between the summits of Pizzo Gallina (north) and the Nufenenstock (south). The pass road from Ulrichen in canton of Valais leads to the Bedretto valley in the canton of Ticino, linking Brig to Airolo. It is not the lowest pass between the two valleys, as it is located one kilometre north of an unnamed slightly lower pass at 2,440 metres (vs 2478 m.), which is traversed by a trail. The road is of relatively recent construction, having been opened to motor vehicle traffic only since September 1969. The source of the Ticino River lies east of the top of the pass. Towards the north are views of the Bernese Alps, including the Finsteraarhorn while there is a view over the Gries Glacier to the south. Formazza ( wae, Pumât, pms, Formassa) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in the Italian region Piedmont, located about northeast of Turin and about north of Verbania, on the border with Switzerland.
