Greyhound racing in Australia is a sport and gambling activity. Australia is one of several countries with a greyhound racing industry. The industry laws are governed by the State Government but the keeping of greyhounds are governed by the Local Authority. Regulation Each Australian state and territory has a greyhound racing body that regulates the racing, training and animal welfare of greyhounds in that state or territory. Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW) and Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) are the two largest authorities, governing over 40 racetracks. The Queensland Greyhound Racing Authority (QGRA), the Western Australian Greyhound Racing Association (WAGRA), Tasracing, Greyhound Racing South Australia (GRSA) and the Northern Territory Racing Authority all contribute to running and monitoring of greyhound racing and animal welfare of greyhounds in Australia. The Golden Easter Egg is an Australian Group 1 greyhound race held annually at Sydney's Wentworth Park racetrack in Glebe. In 2012 it was listed as the richest greyhound race in the world. History The first Golden Easter Egg was held at Wentworth Park, Sydney in 1990. Held annually on Easter Saturday it carries Group 1 status from AGRA, the code's racing regulator. The Golden Easter Egg carnival is in fact held over three weekends, commencing with heat events (8 in total), then followed by Semi Finals week (4 in total) and the Final Event in the third week. The first and second placegetters from the four semi final events fill the places in the final. The Australian greyhound racing live baiting scandal is a series of events that occurred in at least three Australian states where live baiting of racing greyhounds was exposed on ABC TV and in ''The Sydney Morning Herald''. On 16 February 2015, the Australian television current affairs program ''Four Corners'' revealed the use of live piglets, possums and rabbits to train racing greyhounds had been occurring over some years, despite self-regulatory efforts to address the issue. The revelation led to suspensions, inquiries, widespread condemnation of the practice, and, following an inquiry, to the banning of greyhound racing in New South Wales from July 2016, and consequently, the Australian Capital Territory as well.
