Golden Bauhinia Square
The Golden Bauhinia Square () is an open area in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The square was named after the giant statue of a golden ''Bauhinia blakeana'' at the centre of the area, situated outside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where the ceremonies for the Handover of Hong Kong, handover of Hong Kong and the establishment of the Hong Kong, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region were held in July 1997. A flag-raising ceremony is held every day at 8:00 am. It is considered a tourist attraction. The sculpture, a gilded flower bauhinia, is six metres high. The major part is composed of a bauhinia on a base of red granite pillar on a pyramid.The sculpture is deemed an important symbol for the Hong Kong people after the handover. On the second day of Chinese New Year and National Day of the People's Republic of China, the square is lighted up by a firework show. Wan Chai District is one of the districts of Hong Kong, 18 districts of Hong Kong. Of the four on Hong Kong Island, it is north-central, and had 152,608 residents in 2011, a fall from 167,146 residents in 2001. The Lotus Square or Golden Lotus Square (; pt, Praça Flor de Lodão) is an open square in Sé, Macau, China. The area features the large bronze sculpture ''Lotus Flower In Full Bloom'' () and is somewhat akin to the Golden Bauhinia of neighbouring Hong Kong. Description The sculpture, made of gilded bronze, weighs 6.5 tonnes, and is 6 metres high. The diameter of the flower is 3.6 metres at maximum. The major part is composed of a stem, petals and pistil—a total of 16 components. The base consists of 23 pieces of red granite in three layers and in the shape of lotus leaves. These signify the three main parts of the territory: Macau Peninsula, Taipa Island and Coloane Island. The lotus flower in full bloom symbolises the everlasting prosperity of Macau. Wan Chai is situated at the western part of the Wan Chai District on the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, in Hong Kong.
