Glenfaba
Glenfaba ( ; gv, Glion Faba) is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located on the west of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) and consists of the two historic parishes of German and Patrick. Historically, from 1796 until some time in the twentieth century (1986) it also included the parish of Marown. Geographically, the sheading of Glenfaba also includes the town of Peel. Other settlements in the sheading include St John's in the parish of German (home of the Tynwald Day ceremony), and Dalby, Foxdale, Glen Maye and Niarbyl (all in the parish of Patrick). Etymology The first mention of Glenfaba may be in a bull of Pope Gregory IX in 1231. Sheading
Local government ( gv, gurneilys ynnydagh) in the Isle of Man was formerly based on six sheadings, which were divided into seventeen parishes (today referred to as "ancient parishes"). Foxdale
Foxdale (; glv, Forsdal ; on, Fors-dal – 'waterfall dale or valley') consisting of the districts of Upper and Lower Foxdale on the A3 Castletown to Ramsey Road with the junction of the A24 Foxdale to Braaid road and the A40 ''The Hope'' road in the parish of Kirk Patrick in the Isle of Man. The village of Foxdale falls within the sheading of Glenfaba. Politically it is part of the constituency of Glenfaba & Peel and is currently represented in Tynwald and the House of Keys by Ray Harmer MHK and Geoffrey Boot MHK. German ( gv, Carmane) is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the west of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) in the sheading of Glenfaba. Administratively, part of the historic parish of German is now covered by part of the town of Peel. Other settlements in the parish include St John's (home of the Tynwald Day ceremony). Local government For the purposes of local government, The majority of the area of the historic parish forms a single parish district with Commissioners. Since 1884, an area in the west of the historic parish of German has been part of the separate town of Peel, with its own town Commissioners. Patrick (parish)
Patrick ( gv, Perick) is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the west of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) in the sheading of Glenfaba. Administratively, a small part of the area of the historic parish of Patrick is now covered by part of the town of Peel. Other settlements in the parish include Dalby, Foxdale, Glen Maye and Niarbyl. Local government For the purposes of local government, the majority of the area of the historic parish forms a single parish district with Commissioners. Since 1884, a small area in the north of the historic parish of Patrick has been part of the administratively separate town of Peel, with its own town Commissioners. Peel, Isle Of Man
Peel ( gv, Purt ny h-Inshey – Port of the Island) is a seaside town and small fishing port in the Isle of Man, in the historic parish of German but administered separately. Peel is the third largest town in the island after Douglas and Ramsey but the fourth largest settlement, as Onchan has the second largest population but is classified as a village. Until 2016 (when it was merged with Glenfaba) Peel was also a House of Keys constituency, electing one Member of the House of Keys (MHK), who, from September 2015, was Ray Harmer. Peel has a ruined castle on St Patrick's Isle, and a cathedral, seat of the Diocese of Sodor and Man (the diocese was founded when Mann was ruled by the Norse). Tynwald Day
Tynwald Day ( gv, Laa Tinvaal) is the National Day of the Isle of Man, usually observed on 5 July (if this is a Saturday or Sunday, then on the following Monday). On this day, the Island's legislature, Tynwald, meets at St John's, instead of its usual meeting place in Douglas. The session is held partly in the Royal Chapel of St John the Baptist and partly in the open air on the adjacent Tynwald Hill (a small artificial mound). The meeting, which dates back to the 10th century, is known as ''Midsummer Court''. It is attended by members of the two branches of Tynwald: the House of Keys and the Legislative Council. The Lieutenant Governor, the representative of the Lord of Mann, presides except on the occasions when the Lord of Mann or another member of the British Royal Family is present. St John's, Isle Of Man
St John's ( gv, Balley Keeill Eoin) is a small village in the sheading of Glenfaba in the Isle of Man, in the island's central valley. It is in the House of Keys constituency of Glenfaba & Peel, which elects two MHKs. Tynwald Day Tynwald Hill, the original assembly place for the Isle of Man parliament, Tynwald, is the scene of the annual ceremony in which the laws of the Isle of Man are promulgated in English and Manx, usually on July 5. Tynwald Day attracts thousands of spectators to watch the ceremony and participate in the Tynwald Fair. Tynwald Day, July 5, corresponded to St John's feast day by the Julian calendar, which was the date held to be midsummer day; so Tynwald Day was a midsummer fair. The Anglican church in the village is dedicated to St John and the village takes its name from the church. Thomas Kneen
Thomas Kneen (1852 – 23 November 1916) was His Majesty's Clerk of the Rolls for the Isle of Man, a Member of the House of Keys for Glenfaba, and Captain of the Parish of Onchan. Kneen was brought up in a rural and agricultural environment in Andreas. He was educated at Ramsey Grammar School, and subsequently at King William's College. Upon completing his school education he was articled to Alfred Adams, a Douglas advocate. He was admitted to the Manx Bar in 1877 at the age of 24 and commenced practice in Ramsey He soon obtained a reputation as a sound lawyer. In 1880, upon the appointment of Alfred Adams as Clerk of the Rolls, Dickinson invited him to become his partner in one of the largest legal practices in the Isle of Man. His rival at the Bar was the Attorney General. Kneen also took a considerable interest in politics. Marown
Marown ( , rhymes with "gown"; gv, Marooney) is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is the only landlocked parish on the Island. It is located in the centre of the island, in the sheading of Middle, though historically, from 1796 until 1986, it was in the sheading of Glenfaba. Settlements in the parish include Braaid, Crosby and Glen Vine. Local government For the purposes of local government, the whole of the historic parish forms a single parish district with Commissioners. Dalby, Isle Of Man
Dalby ( glv, Delbee) is a small hamlet on the Isle of Man, near the western coast. It lies on the A27 Port Erin to Peel road, five miles south of Peel, in the parish of Patrick. The hamlet looks out towards the Irish Sea from the western side of Dalby Mountain. The Raad ny Foillan long distance coastal footpath runs through Dalby. Prior to its closure in 2007, the hamlet had a public house called the Ballacallin Hotel which was known for its views of the sunset over Niarbyl. The hotel later went up in flames on the 9th of February 2021 and was subsequently demolished. Niarbyl is home to a cafe and visitor centre, as well as some traditional Manx cottages. It can be accessed by car, with parking available at the cafe. During World War II, a radar station was located at Dalby. The radar station consisted of a number of bunkers, still visible in the fields between Dalby and Niarbyl and now part of local farm land.
