George Gipps
Sir George Gipps (23 December 1790 – 28 February 1847) was the Governor of the British colony of New South Wales for eight years, between 1838 and 1846. His governorship oversaw a tumultuous period where the rights to land were bitterly contested in a three way struggle between the colonial government, Aboriginal people and wealthy graziers known as squatters. The management of other major issues such as the end of convict transportation, large immigration programs and the introduction of majority elected representation also featured strongly during his tenure. Gipps is regarded as a man who brought a high moral and intellectual standard to the position of governor, but was ultimately defeated in his aims by the increasing power and avarice of the squatters. George Gipps (MP For Canterbury)
George Gipps (c. 1728 – 13 February 1800) was an English apothecary, hop merchant, banker and politician who sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain between 1780 and 1796. Gipps was the son of Henry Gipps, a staymaker of Ashford, and his wife Sarah Flint. He began as an apothecary at Canterbury but later became a hop merchant. Gipps was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Canterbury in 1780 and held the seat to 1796. By 1790 he had given up the hop trade to become a banker in the firm Gipps, Simmons and Gipps of Canterbury. He had also taken the lease of Hall Place in Harbledown. The election of 28 May 1796 was declared void in March 1797 and he was reinstated as MP for Canterbury and remained until 1800. George Gipps (29 December 1783 – 26 April 1869) of Howletts, near Canterbury, Kent, was an English politician. He was born the eldest son of George Gipps, MP of Harbledown, near Canterbury, Kent and educated at Charterhouse School (1793), St. John’s College, Cambridge (1801) and Lincoln's Inn (1805). In 1816 he purchased the recently rebuilt Howletts House, between Littlebourne and Bekesbourne, where he and his wife lived until their deaths. Henry Plumptre Gipps (1813 – 2 July 1859) was an English lawyer and Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1852 to 1853. Gipps was born at Norton, near Faversham, the son of the Rev. Henry Gipps and his wife Emma Maria Plumptre. Sir Richard Gipps (1659 – 21 December 1708) of Great Whelnetham, Suffolk, was Master of the Revels at Gray's Inn and a historian of the county of Suffolk. Ruth Dorothy Louisa ("Wid") Gipps (20 February 1921 – 23 February 1999) was an English composer, oboist, pianist, conductor, and educator.
