Gerrit Rietveld Academie
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie, also known as Rietveld School of Art & Design and Rietveld Academy, is an art academy in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The academy was founded in 1924 and offers programs in fine arts and design. The Zuidas (literally ''South Axis'' in Dutch) is a rapidly developing business district in the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The Zuidas is also known as the 'Financial Mile'. It lies between the rivers Amstel and ''Schinkel'' along the ringway A10. The greatest influences for the development of the Zuidas are La Défense in Paris and Canary Wharf in London. Marjan Van Aubel
Marjan van Aubel (born in 1985) is a Dutch solar designer based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Education Van Aubel graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy with a BA DesignLAB in 2009, and in 2012 gained an MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art in London. Career and awards Most of van Aubel's work involves incorporating solar cells into furniture, windows, and other objects. She has also designed a cover to maximize the surface area and thus the yield of a solar panel. Frank Ammerlaan (born 1979 in Sassenheim) is a Dutch artist who lives and works in London. Henk Van Der Waal
Henk van der Waal (born 1960) is a Dutch poet. Early life Van der Waal studied philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. Career Van der Waal has worked as a journalist, a translator and as a teacher at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. In 1996, he won the C. Buddingh'-prijs for his debut poetry collection ''De windsels van de sfinx'' (1995). His second poetry collection ''Schuldsanering'' (2000) was nominated for the Paul Snoek-poëzieprijs. Sybren Valkema
Sybren Valkema (1916–1996) was a Dutch glass artist and teacher, and founder of the European Studio Glass Movement, also known as VRIJ GLAS (Free Glass). Background and education Sybren Valkema was raised in an anthroposophic, artistic and politically left-wing environment, his parents were both cultural and socially engaged. His decision to teach was made early, and he was trained at modern educational institutions. Jan Van Der Vaart (ceramist)
Johannes Jacobus (Jan) van der Vaart (The Hague, 17 October 1931 – Leiden, 8 November 2000) was an influential Dutch ceramicist from the 20th century, known as founder of the abstract-geometric ceramics in the Netherlands. One of the key concepts in his work was the reintroduction of the pyramid or tulips tower, a specific type of tulip vase, from the 16th century in his own constructivist form. Gerard Unger
Gerard Unger (22 January 1942 – 23 November 2018) was a Dutch graphic and type designer. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam from 1963–67, and subsequently worked at Total Design, Prad and Joh. Enschedé. In 1975, he established himself as an independent developer. A long-time guest lecturer at the University of Reading, he mentored many modern typeface designers. He lived and worked in Bussum, Netherlands. Work Unger developed many typefaces over the years, of which several specially developed for newspapers (usually typefaces with a large x-height and large inner counters), such as Swift, Gulliver, Coranto and Vesta. He also developed designs for magazines, coins, books, logos and stamps. Henk Trumpie
Henk Trumpie (born The Hague, 8 August 1937) was a Dutch ceramist and sculptor. Life and work Born in The Hague, Trumpie studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, and took glaze lessons at the Porceleyne Fles pottery in Delft, where he was involved in the production of ceramic works for other artists, such as Karel Appel. In 1969, he and Jacques van Gaalen founded the ceramics studio Struktuur 68. Gwen Heeney (2003) recalled, that "the studio has applied itself to the manufacturing of large-scale ceramic sculpture in collaboration with many international artists (many of whom have been unfamiliar with ceramics)". Martin Majoor (born 14 October 1960) is a Dutch type designer and graphic designer. As of 2006, he had worked since 1997 in both Arnhem, Netherlands, and Warsaw, Poland. Biography Early life Majoor was born in 1960 in the town of Baarn, in the Dutch province of Utrecht.
