George Vanden-Bempde, 3rd Marquess Of Annandale
George Vanden Bempde (earlier Johnstone) (29 May 1720 – 29 April 1792), 3rd Marquess of Annandale, succeeded James Johnstone, 2nd Marquess of Annandale on his death in 1730 (but in practice from 1733), and enjoyed that title from then to his own death, whereupon the title became extinct. His change of surname from Johnstone to Vanden Bempde was a condition of receiving an inheritance from John Vanden Bempde, and was confirmed by an Act of Parliament of 1744. James Johnstone, 2nd Marquess Of Annandale
James Johnstone, 3rd Earl of Annandale and Hartfell and 2nd Marquess of Annandale (c.1687–1730) was a Scottish politician who sat in the British House of Commons briefly in 1708 before being disqualified as eldest son of a Scottish peer. Johnstone was born about 1688, the eldest son of William Johnstone, 2nd Earl of Annandale and Hartfell and 1st Marquess of Annandale and his first wife Sophia Fairholm daughter of John Fairholm of Craigiehall, Linlithgow. After the Act of Union Johnstone was returned by his father at the 1708 British general election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for both Dumfriesshire and Linlithgowshire. However he was disqualified from both seats on 3 December 1708 because he was the eldest son of a Scottish peer. Earl Of Annandale And Hartfell
Earl of Annandale and Hartfell is a title in the Peerage of Scotland, created in 1661 for James Johnstone. In 1625, the title of Earl of Annandale had been created for John Murray, but it became extinct when his son James died without heirs. James Johnstone, son of Sir James Johnstone, Warden of the West Marches, was created Lord Johnstone of Lochwood in 1633, and in 1643, was further created Earl of Hartfell. Johnstone's son, also James, resigned the earldom and received a regrant of the title, as Earl of Annandale and Hartfell, in 1661, and a further regrant of the same title, but by crown charter, in 1662 to his heirs male of the body, whom failing, his heirs female of the body. William, the second Earl of Annandale and Hartfell, was created ''Marquess of Annandale'' in 1701. Sir Richard Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone, 1st Baronet (21 September 1732 – 14 July 1807) was a British Member of Parliament. Early life Born Richard Johnstone he was the son of Colonel John Johnstone (d. 1741), second son of Sir William Johnstone, 2nd Baronet, of Westerhall. His mother was Charlotte, daughter of John van den Bempde of Hackness Hall in Hackness, near Scarborough, Yorkshire. Career Vanden-Bampde-Johnstone was elected to the House of Commons for Weymouth in 1790, a seat he held until 1796. On 6 July 1795 he was created a Baronet, of Hackness Hall in the North Riding of the County of York. Personal life In November 1756, he married Catherine Agnew, a daughter of James Agnew. James Hope-Johnstone, 3rd Earl Of Hopetoun
James Hope-Johnstone, 3rd Earl of Hopetoun FRSE (23 August 1741 – 29 May 1816), known as Viscount Aithrie from 1742 to 1781, was a Scottish Representative Peer and military leader. Life Hopetoun was the son of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun, and his first wife, Lady Anne Ogilvy, daughter of James Ogilvy, 5th Earl of Findlater. His many siblings and half siblings included his sister Lady Henrietta Hope. Being set on a military career he spent from 1758 until 1764 as an Ensign (junior officer) in the British Army. He succeeded to the earldom of Hopetoun on the death of his father in 1781. He was Lord-Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire from 1794 to 1816 and sat in the House of Lords as a Scottish Representative Peer from 1784 to 1790 and from 1794 to 1796. In 1786 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Scotland. His proposers were John Walker, James Hutton and Henry Cullen.
