George Shenton (footballer)
George "Shino" Shenton (15 June 1899 – 10 February 1978) was an English Association football, footballer who played at Defender (association football), right-back for Port Vale F.C., Port Vale from 1927 to 1936. Featuring in 196 league and cup games, he helped the "Valiants" to win the Football League Third Division North, Third Division North title in 1929–30. Career Shenton played for Naybro Stone, Downing's Tileries and Blythe Bridge, before joining Port Vale F.C., Port Vale as an amateur in June 1927. He signed professional forms with the "Valiants" in August that year, and made his debut on 10 November in a 3–1 defeat to Grimsby Town F.C., Grimsby Town at Blundell Park. Hanley, Staffordshire
Hanley is one of the Federation of Stoke-on-Trent, six towns that, along with Burslem, Longton, Staffordshire, Longton, Fenton, Staffordshire, Fenton, Tunstall, Staffordshire, Tunstall and Stoke-upon-Trent, amalgamated to form the City of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. The Old Recreation Ground
The Old Recreation Ground was a football stadium located in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England, and home to Port Vale F.C. from 1913 to 1950. It was the sixth ground the club used. Structure and facilities The stadium was in rather bad condition, especially following years of neglect during World War II. The dressing rooms were bare, there were no toilet facilities throughout the entire ground, and racing pigeons were kept by '' The Sentinel'' and a number of supporters so as to relay the scoreline to different parts of the city. History Port Vale F.C. opened the ground in 1913, and six years later were admitted into the English Football League. The visit of Potteries derby rivals Stoke on 6 March 1920 saw a crowd of 22,697 turn up to see an away victory. Other big matches for Port Vale went more favourably in later years though, as they drew 2–2 with Arsenal in the FA Cup on 29 January 1927 and beat Sunderland 2–0 on 13 January 1936, again in the FA Cup.
