The geology of Peru includes ancient Proterozoic rocks, Paleozoic and Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks, and numerous basins and the Andes Mountains formed in the Cenozoic. Geological history, stratigraphy & tectonics The oldest rocks in Peru date to the Precambrian and are more than two billion years old. Along the southern coast, granulite and charnockite shows reworking by an ancient orogeny mountain building event. Situated close to the Peru-Chile Trench, these rocks have anomalously high strontium isotope ratios, which suggest recent calc-alkaline volcanism. A granitoid is a generic term for a diverse category of coarse-grained igneous rocks that consist predominantly of quartz, plagioclase, and alkali feldspar. Granitoids range from plagioclase-rich tonalites to alkali-rich syenites and from quartz-poor monzonites to quartz-rich quartzolites. As only two of the three defining mineral groups (quartz, plagioclase, and alkali feldspar) need to be present for the rock to be called a granitoid, foid-bearing rocks, which predominantly contain feldspars but no quartz, are also granitoids. The Miocene ( ) is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about (Ma). In geology, the term sial refers to the composition of the upper layer of Earth's crust, namely rocks rich in aluminium silicate minerals. It is sometimes equated with the continental crust because it is absent in the wide oceanic basins, but 'sial' is a geochemical term rather than a plate tectonic term. As these elements are less dense than the majority of Earth's elements, they tend to be concentrated in the upper layer of the crust. Marañón Fold And Thrust Belt
The Marañón fold and thrust belt ( es, faja corrida y plegada del Marañón) is a long, northwest–southeast trending belt of deformed rocks located in the Andes of central Peru. The formation of the belt defines the Incaic Phase of the Andean orogeny. Prior to the deformation and uplift the rocks forming the Marañón fold and thrust belt constituted the fill of a marine back-arc basin that existed in the Mesozoic and was parallel to the present-day coast. The west-dipping Chonta Fault existed as a normal fault within this basin and allowed continued basin subsidence and sediment accumulation in the Mesozoic. The onset of Andean orogeny first caused the basin to rise and dry up with red beds being deposited in its eastern part. Then the sedimentary basin was subject of a complete basin inversion. The Albian is both an age of the geologic timescale and a stage in the stratigraphic column. It is the youngest or uppermost subdivision of the Early/Lower Cretaceous Epoch/Series. Dolomite (also known as dolomite rock, dolostone or dolomitic rock) is a sedimentary carbonate rock that contains a high percentage of the mineral dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2.
