Gayby Baby
''Gayby Baby'' is a 2015 Australian documentary film directed by Maya Newell that follows four children raised by same-sex parents. Synopsis ''Gayby Baby'' observes the lives of four children—Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham—whose parents are either gay or lesbian, and explores the ways in which growing up as a "gayby" has affected them. Production ''Gayby Baby'' was produced over three and a half years. It was conceived and directed by Maya Newell, who was raised by lesbian mothers and felt that, in the same-sex marriage debate in the Australian media, "no one was actually talking to any kids". Maya Newell
Maya Newell is an Australian filmmaker, known for the feature-length documentaries ''Gayby Baby'' (2015) and ''In My Blood It Runs'' (2019). She works at Closer Productions in Adelaide, South Australia. Newell had intended to study international relations or medicine, but at the age of 17 won a scholarship to attend Sydney Film School for a year. Newell made several documentary short films before her feature-length films. While still a student at the film school, she made a documentary called ''Richard'' (2007), about a passionate toymaker with whom she made friends while filming. After he took his own life during the making of the film, she wrestled with the ethics of completing the film, but decided ultimately that it was a way of helping to invoke empathy. Prior to November 2017, the Safe Schools Coalition Australia (SSCA) functioned as a group of organisations in Australia focused on LGBTIQ people in schools. Its mission is to create safe and inclusive schools for students, families and staff who are in these groups. The primary activity of the SSCA is the Safe Schools Program that was developed to give support to teachers and schools who had been seeking assistance in the creation of a more inclusive environment for LGBTIQ students and their families. The program began in Victorian schools in 2010 and expanded nationwide in 2013. The Program was the first of its kind in Australia.
