Garff
Garff () is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) and consists of the two historic parishes of Lonan and Maughold. Before 1796 it also included the parish of Onchan. Administratively, since May 2016 the sheading of Garff has been covered by a single Garff local authority, a parish district, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold. The town of Ramsey, which is administered separately, covers areas of two historic parishes (Maughold, and Lezayre in the sheading of Ayre). It is treated as part of Garff for some purposes, e.g. the coroner. Other settlements in the sheading include Baldrine and Ballabeg (both in the parish of Lonan), and Ballure in the parish of Maughold. Etymology The origin of the name is uncertain. Local government ( gv, gurneilys ynnydagh) in the Isle of Man was formerly based on six sheadings, which were divided into seventeen parishes (today referred to as "ancient parishes"). Lonan ( ; gv, Lonan) is one of the 17 parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Garff. Other settlements in the parish include Baldrine and Ballabeg. Local government For the purposes of local government, since May 2016 the historic parish of Lonan has been part of a single Garff local authority, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold. Until this amalgamation, the village district of Laxey had been separated from its surrounding parish of Lonan since 1895. Laxey
Laxey ( gv, Laksaa) is a village on the east coast of the Isle of Man. Its name derives from the Old Norse ''Laxa'' meaning 'Salmon River'. Its key distinguishing features are its three working vintage railways and the largest working waterwheel in the world. It is also the location of King Orry's Grave. The village lies on the A2, the main Douglas to Ramsey road, and on the vintage Manx Electric Railway, and Snaefell Mountain Railway. Laxey Glen is one of the Manx National Glens; another glen, Dhoon Glen, is about 1 miles away. The Raad ny Foillan long distance coastal footpath, opened in 1986, runs along the coast of Laxey Bay through the village. Maughold (parish)
Maughold ( ; gv, Maghal) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is named for St Maughold, the island's patron saint. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Garff. Administratively, part of the historic parish of Maughold is now within Ramsey town. Ballure is another settlement in the parish. Local government Since 1865, a small area in the north of the historic parish of Maughold has been part of the separate town of Ramsey, with its own town commissioners. Onchan (parish)
Onchan ( ; gv, Connaghyn), historically Kirk Conchan, is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Middle, though before 1796 it was in the sheading of Garff. Administratively, part of the historic parish of Onchan is now covered by part of the borough of Douglas, the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man. Local government For the purposes of local government, most of the historic parish forms a single district with Commissioners. In 1896, an area in the south-west of the historic parish of Onchan became part of the borough of Douglas, since when it has been governed by a municipal corporation with 18 councillors and an elected mayor. Baldrine
Baldrine is a village in the Isle of Man. It is close to the east coast of the island, about 3 km south of Laxey and 6 km NE of Douglas. It is in the historic parish of Lonan, in the sheading of Garff. For administrative purposes it is in the parish district of Garff, and it is also in the House of Keys constituency of Garff. Geography Baldrine is located on the A2 road, the coast road between Douglas and Ramsey and the area includes three halts (or stations) on the Manx Electric Railway: Baldrine, Sunnycott and Garwick Glen. The River Gawne flows through the village and then through Garwick Glen down towards Garwick Beach at Garwick Bay (part of Laxey Bay). Ayre ( ; gv, Inver Ayre) is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located in the north of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) and consists of the three historic parishes of Andreas, Bride and (Kirk Christ) Lezayre. Ballure, Isle Of Man
Ballure is a small hamlet about 0.75 mile southeast of Ramsey on the Isle of Man. A stop on the Manx Electric Railway which runs through it is the Ballure Halt (or Ballure Glen) station. The latter lies just to the south of the boundary of Ramsey, and thus lies in the ward (and traditional parish) of Maughold within the current administrative parish (and traditional sheading) of Garff. Ballabeg, Lonan
There are about eight small places on the Isle of Man with the name Ballabeg. The name Ballabeg derives from the Manx which means small homestead; although the spelling is different, it is pronounced approximately the same as the English name. This article is about the hamlet of Ballabeg in the parish of Lonan, on the east of the island, overlooking Laxey Bay. The settlement dates from at least 1643, when a ''Ballabegg'' was recorded on the Castle Rushen Manorial Roll, under the ownership of Furness Abbey. It is about 300 metres from the sea shore. Ballabeg in Lonan is located 9 km or nearly 6 miles NE of the capital, Douglas, and 2 km south of the village of Laxey. The hamlet only consists of a farm and a handful of houses, but also is home to the small Ballabeg tram stop which celebrated its centenary in 2005. John Allen Mylrea
John Allen Mylrea MHK (January 23, 1849 – July 13, 1911), was a member of the House of Keys, Chairman of the Isle of Man Steam Packet CompanyIsle of Man Times, Saturday, September 18, 1943; Page: 4 and a director of Dumbell's Bank, who in the late 19th century played a prominent part in the arts and culture of the Isle of Man. Charles Kerruish
Sir Henry Charles Kerruish OBE LLD CP MLC (23 July 1917 – 2 August 2003) was a Manx politician who was the first President of Tynwald and, as Speaker of the House of Keys from 1962 to 1990, was the longest-serving Speaker in any Parliament in the Commonwealth. He was also the first Chairman of the Executive Council, the forerunner of the present Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, from 1961 to 1967.
