Gareth Roberts (physicist)
Sir Gareth Gwyn Roberts (16 May 1940 – 6 February 2007) was a Welsh physicist specialising in semiconductors and molecular electronics, who was influential in British science policy through his chairmanship of several academic bodies and his two reports on the future supply of scientists and how university research should be assessed. He was knighted in 1997 for his services to higher education. Academic and public service career Born in Penmaenmawr, Caernarvonshire, North Wales, he studied physics to PhD level at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, graduating in 1964. Following a post at the New University of Ulster, he was appointed Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Durham in 1976, where he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1984. Gareth John Pritchard Roberts (born 5 June 1968) is a British television screenwriter and novelist, best known for his work related to the science-fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. He has also worked on various comedy series and soap operas. Early life Roberts studied drama at King Alfred's College (now the University of Winchester) and Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University). He has also worked as a clerk at the Court of Appeal. Career Roberts has worked on some of the most popular British soap operas, including Channel 4's now-defunct ''Brookside'' as a scriptwriter (1999–2003), and as a story associate on ITV's ''Coronation Street'' in 1997. In 1998 he worked as a script editor on ITV's other long-running soap, ''Emmerdale'', moving across to write several episodes himself the following year. Gareth Roberts (footballer)
Gareth Wyn Roberts (born 6 February 1978) is a Welsh former footballer. He played more than 600 league games in a 22-year career which has taken in eight different clubs, and was capped nine times for Wales. He was part of the Tranmere Rovers side which reached the club's first major cup final in 2000. He is currently assistant manager at Stalybridge Celtic. Club career Early career Roberts started his career as a trainee at Liverpool and played alongside future England internationals Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher in the 1996 FA Youth Cup winning side, who beat a West Ham United side featuring Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand. Roberts failed to make the grade at Anfield, however, and was released by the club which led to him being signed up by Ronnie Whelan, then manager of Greek side Panionios. His stay in Greece was very brief however, lasting just 15 league games, however he did feature in both of their legs of their Cup Winners Cup quarter final against eventual winner ... Gareth Owen Roberts FRS (born 1964) is a statistician and applied probabilist. He is Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics and Director of the Centre for Research in Statistical Methodology (CRiSM) at the University of Warwick. He is an established authority on the stability of Markov chains, especially applied to Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) theory methodology for a wide range of latent statistical models with applications in spatial statistics, infectious disease epidemiology and finance. Education Roberts was educated at Jesus College, Oxford, graduating in 1985 in Mathematics and subsequently went on to complete in 1988 a PhD thesis on ''Some boundary hitting problems for diffusion processes'' under the supervision of Saul Jacka at the University of Warwick. Gareth "Jaffa" Roberts (6 August 1987 – 16 June 2012) was a rally co-driver from Carmarthen in Wales, who was killed in an accident while competing in the Targa Florio Rally in Sicily while sitting alongside Irish driver Craig Breen Craig Breen (born 2 February 1990) is an Irish rally driver, who competes part time in the Hyundai team in the WRC (World Rally Championship). He was the 2012 WRC Super 2000 world rally champion, scoring class wins in the Monte Carlo Rally, .... The crash happened during the eighth stage of the rally when their Peugeot 207 went off the road about five miles from the start of the Cefalu leg.
