The Galleria d'Arte Moderna of Bologna is the modern art museum of the city. It has five exhibition venues: MAMbo, the Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna; the Villa delle Rose; the ; Casa Morandi; and the . The collections consist of more than 3,500 items of modern and contemporary art. History The gallery was founded in 1925, in the Villa delle Rose, a building donated to the City of Bologna by Countess Nerina Armandi Avogli. The collection was re-ordered in 1936. Soon, thanks to many acquisitions and bequests, the collection grew large and by 1961 had already reached more than 2,000 items. In 1975 some works were transferred to a new building, designed by Leone Pancaldi, in the Fair district. The Palazzo Pitti (), in English sometimes called the Pitti Palace, is a vast, mainly Renaissance, palace in Florence, Italy. It is situated on the south side of the River Arno, a short distance from the Ponte Vecchio. The core of the present palazzo dates from 1458 and was originally the town residence of Luca Pitti, an ambitious Florentine banker. The palace was bought by the Medici family in 1549 and became the chief residence of the ruling families of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. It grew as a great treasure house as later generations amassed paintings, plates, jewelry and luxurious possessions. In the late 18th century, the palazzo was used as a power base by Napoleon and later served for a brief period as the principal royal palace of the newly united Italy.
