''The Cow'' (, ''Gāv'', ''Gaav'', or ''Gav'') is a 1969 Iranian film directed by Dariush Mehrjui, written by Gholam-Hossein Saedi based on his own short story, and starring Ezzatolah Entezami as Masht Hassan. Some critics consider it the first film of the Iranian New Wave. Plot The story begins by showcasing the close relationship between a middle-aged Iranian villager Masht Hassan and his beloved cow. Hassan is married but has no children. His only valuable property is a cow that he cherishes as the only cow in the village. When Hassan must leave the village for a short time, the pregnant cow is found dead in the barn. Hassan's fellow villagers fear his reaction and cover up the evidence of the death and tell him upon his return that his cow has run away. Gholam Hossein Saedi
Gholām-Hossein Sā'edi MD (, also transliterated as Gholamhoseyn Sa'edi and Ghulamhusayn Sa'idi; January 15, 1936 in Tabriz – November 23, 1985 in Paris) was a prolific Iranian writer. He published over forty books, representing his talents in the fiction genres of drama (under the pen name ''Gohar Morad'' or ''Gowhar Murad,'' according to Library of Congress arabicised transliteration), the novel, the screenplay, and the short story in addition to the non-fiction genres of cultural criticism, travel literature and ethnography. Many consider the screenplay for '' Gav'' ("The Cow"), Dariush Mehrjui's 1969 film, to be Sa'edi's magnum opus as it ushered in the New Wave Iranian cinema. Parviz Fannizadeh
Parviz Fannizadeh (; January 27, 1938 – February 24, 1980) was an Iranian film and television actor. He was one of Iran's first method actors. Fannizadeh is best known for his roles as "Mash Ghaasem" in '' My Uncle Napoleon'' (aka ''Daii jan Napelon'' and "Hekmati" in ''Downpour''. Career Fannizadeh was born and raised in Tehran. He had a passion for acting and started his career at an early age. He graduated from the Iranian Academy of the Dramatic Arts in 1961. In 1966 he played his first role. He won the best actor prize at the Fifth Iranian National Film Festival ''"Sepas"'' in 1973 for portraying Mr. Hekmati in Bahram Bayzai's film '' Downpour'' (''Ragbar'') (1972). Dariush Mehrjui
Dariush Mehrjui (; 8 December 1939 – 14 October 2023) was an Iranian filmmaker and a member of the Iranian Academy of the Arts. Mehrjui was a founding member of the Iranian New Wave movement of the early 1970s, which also included directors Masoud Kimiai and Nasser Taqvai. His second film, ''The Cow'' (1969), is considered to be the first film of this movement. Most of his films are inspired by literature and adapted from Iranian and foreign novels and plays. On 14 October 2023, Mehrjui and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were found stabbed to death in their home in the city of Karaj, near Tehran.
