Güira De Macurijes
Pedro Betancourt, sometimes shortened as Betancourt, is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. It is located in the center of the province, west of Jagüey Grande and east of Unión de Reyes. It was founded in 1833. History Its original name was Corral Falso de Macurijes. Pedro Betancourt's name comes from a famous Spanish-Cuban patriot, Pedro Estanislao Betancourt Dávalos, who was one of the Major-General in the independence war, waged by the Cuban natives against the Spanish Crown. Geography The municipality was historically divided into the barrios of Cabecera Norte, Cabecera Sur (both constituting the town), Ciego, Linche, Navajas, Platanal, Punta Brava, Torriente and Tramojos. Jovellanos
Jovellanos is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. Overview The municipality is divided into the barrios of Asunción, Isabel, Realengo and San José. It was founded in 1842 as Corral de la Bemba on the location of an old ranch called ''Bemba''. It took its current name in 1870, in honor of the Spanish writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. The same year it achieved the status of ''villa'' (town). Jovellanos is also called "Bemba" by its inhabitants and locals. "Bemba" means "big lip" in Cuban Spanish; this term refers to the black population of the city. To outsiders, it may have negative racial overtones, but in the city this is not the case. Inside Jovellanos, the black and white population for the most part live harmoniously, side by side. Therefore, "Bemba" is an affectionate name for the town used by locals. Pedro Betancourt Dávalos
Pedro Betancourt Dávalos (1858–1933) was a medical doctor, major general, diplomat, Secretary of Agriculture, politician, and Cuban revolutionary in the Cuban War of Independence. Early life and education Pedro Betancourt Dávalos was born on August 6, 1858, in La Palma near the town of Sabanilla del Encomendador, Matanzas Province. His parents were Juan Florencio Betancourt and Clotilde Davalos. His early studies took place at ''Las Normales'' in the city of Matanzas. He would return to the family farm in Sabanilla during the holidays. Later, his secondary school, ''La Empresa'', was run by the Guitars brothers. At this time he was exposed to liberal and revolutionary ideas. The school was closed by order of the Spanish government at the beginning of the war in 1868.
