Hermann Görtz
Hermann Görtz (also anglicised as Goertz; 15 November 1890 – 23 May 1947) was a German spy in Britain and Ireland before and during World War II, liaising with the Irish Republican Army (IRA). After the war, he committed suicide rather than be deported from Ireland to Germany. Background Hermann Görtz was born in the port city of Lübeck in northern Germany on 15 November 1890. Few details are available about his service in World War I, but it is thought he fought on the Eastern Front against Russia before being wounded around Christmas 1914, later receiving the Iron Cross first class for valour. He joined the Imperial German Air Service in 1915. He trained as a pilot and served as a reconnaissance officer, but after he showed a talent for interrogation of captured enemies, he was promoted to the rank of Captain as an interrogations officer by the end of the war. Georg Heinrich von Görtz, Baron of Schlitz (1668 – 19 February 1719), diplomat in Swedish service, was born in Holstein and educated at Jena. Early life Born into an old and prominent German noble family from Fulda, he was the eldest of four sons of Philipp Friedrich von Schlitz gen. von Görtz (1641-1695) by his first wife, Juliane von Minnigerode (1652-1687). From his father's second marriage to Sophia Philippine von Ilten (1669-1732), he had three more half siblings. Career He entered the Holstein-Gottorp service, and after the death of the duchess Hedwig Sophia, Charles XII of Sweden's sister, became very influential during the minority of her son Duke Charles Frederick. His earlier policy aimed at strengthening Holstein-Gottorp at the expense of Denmark. Ulrich Görtz (1973) is a German mathematician specialising in arithmetic geometry. Education and career From 1993 to 1997, Görtz studied mathematics at the University of Münster. He completed his PhD at the University of Cologne in 2000; his advisor was Michael Rapoport. In 2006, Görtz habilitation, habilitated at the University of Bonn. From 2008 to 2009 he was the recipient of a Heisenberg-Stipendium of the German Research Foundation (DFG). He received the Von-Kaven-Ehrenpreis of the DFG. Since 2009, Görtz has been a professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Books Together with , Görtz authored the textbook ''Algebraic Geometry (Part I: Schemes)'' in 2010. Count Albrecht von Goertz, also known as Albrecht Goertz (German: ''Albrecht Graf von Schlitz genannt von Goertz und von Wrisberg''; 12 January 1914 – 27 October 2006), was a German industrial designer who designed cars for BMW, including the BMW 503 and BMW 507. He also was an early contributor to the design of the legendary Toyota 2000GT and the first generation Nissan Silvia. Early life He was born at Brunkensen in Lower Saxony, the second of three children of Rudolf Graf von Schlitz genannt von Goertz und von Wrisberg (1884–1933) and his wife, Else Meyer (1882–1968). His elder brother Eberhard died in 1951, and while Albrecht did not technically inherit the honorific , he began to call himself "The Count," and is often referred to that way.
