Gábor Grendel
Gábor Grendel (born 15 July 1980)Gábor Grendel. In: is a Slovak journalist and politician. Since 2016 he has served as a Member of the National Council. In addition, he has been a Deputy Speaker of the Council since 2020. Between 2017 and 2019 he was the Chairman of the NOVA party. Early life Grendel was born on 15 July 1980 in Bratislava to an intellectual family of Hungarian ethnicity. His father was a prominent writer Lajos Grendel and journalist Ágota Grendel. In 2003 he graduated in Journalism and Hungarian language at the Comenius University. Journalism career Following his graduation, Grendel worked as a journalist for the Új Szó daily, Twist radio as well as TA3 and Markíza TV Channels. In 2010 he became the spokesman for the Interior Affairs minister Daniel Lipšic. Political career Grender was among the founders of the New Majority (NOVA) party headed by Lipšic. Hungarians are the largest ethnic minority in Slovakia. According to th2021 Slovak census 422,065 people (or 7.75% of the population) declared themselves Hungarians, while 462,175 (8.48% of the population) stated that Hungarian was their mother tongue. 2020 Slovak Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovakia on 29 February 2020 to elect all 150 members of the National Council. The anti-corruption list led by Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) movement emerged as the largest parliamentary group, winning 53 seats. The ruling coalition comprising Direction – Social Democracy (SMER–SD), the Slovak National Party (SNS), and Most–Híd (MH), led by Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini of SMER–SD, won only 38, with both the SNS and MH losing their parliamentary representation. It was the first time since the 2006 elections that SMER–SD did not emerge as the party with the most seats. As no party or electoral coalition won a majority of seats, a coalition government was needed.
