Gymea is a suburb in southern Sydney, Australia. Gymea is south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. The postcode is 2227, which it shares with adjacent suburb Gymea Bay. History The Gymea Lily, ''Doryanthes excelsa'' is a 6m tall perennial that is prevalent in the area. It was named by the local Dharawal people as ''kai'mia'' in the Dharawal language. This word became the inspiration for the suburb's name, by government surveyor W.A.B. Geaves in 1855. The Gymea Lily has been adopted as a symbol of the area and features on the crest of many local organisations. Development in the area has eradicated most of the lilies but many can still be found, a few kilometres south, in the Royal National Park. Gymea railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the Cronulla line, serving the Sutherland Shire suburb of Gymea. It is served by Sydney Trains' T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line services. History Gymea station opened on 16 December 1939 when the Cronulla line opened from Sutherland to Cronulla. The station was upgraded in 2005 and given a lift and canopies over the stairs. Originally, Gymea was one of two crossing loops on the line, with the other being at Caringbah. 2021 Australian Census
The 2021 Australian census, simply called the 2021 Census, was the eighteenth national Census of Population and Housing in Australia. The 2021 Census took place on 10 August 2021, and was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). It had a response rate of 96.1%, up from the 95.1% at the 2016 census. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as 25,422,788, an increase of 8.6 per cent or 2,020,896 people over the previous 2016 census. Results from the 2021 census were released to the public on 28 June 2022 from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website. A small amount of additional 2021 census data was released in October 2022 and in 2023. Australia's next census is scheduled to take place in 2026. The Tharawal people and other variants, are an Aboriginal Australian people, identified by the Yuin language. Traditionally, they lived as hunter–fisher–gatherers in family groups or clans with ties of kinship, scattered along the coastal area of what is now the Sydney basin in New South Wales. Etymology ''Dharawal'' means cabbage palm.
