Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson
Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson (born 8 August 1979) is an Icelandic retired handball player and current coach of VfL Gummersbach. A captain of the Iceland men's national handball team, Guðjón Valur broke the world record for most goals scored in international men's handball in 2018. He won silver with the Icelandic handball team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as bronze at the 2010 European Championship. Club career Guðjón started his handball career at a young age with Grótta on Seltjarnarnes. He also played with KA Akureyri and lost the Icelandic championship final in 2001. KA won the championship final the year after he left. After that, he began his professional career in Germany with Essen. In 2005, Gudjón Valur won the European championship with Essen. Later that year, he joined Gummersbach. Alfreð Gíslason
Alfreð Gíslason (born 7 September 1959) is an Icelandic handball coach and former player. He is the current head coach of the German men's national team and former coach of the Icelandic men's national team. His coaching career started in 1997 with KA and he later coached THW Kiel for 11 seasons. In total, 27 handballers to date have scored 1000 or more goals for their national teams at senior level. A vast majority of the players who scored at least 1000 goals, are from the modern era of the sport. This is partly because fewer games were played at international level than today. Péter Kovács held the record for most goals scored, until Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson beat his record in 2018. France is the country with the most entries on this list, with four players having scored 1000 or more goals. Only two players on this list have played for two different federations. Frank-Michael Wahl scored 1338 goals for East Germany and 74 goals for the German national team, also Talant Duyshebaev, who scored for USSR, Unified Team and Russia and 569 goals for Spain. Péter Kovács (handballer)
Péter Kovács (born April 8, 1955 in Budapest) is a former Hungarian international handball player and handball coach. One of the best players of his time, Kovács played 323 times for Hungary and scored 1797 goals, having captured a World Championship silver medal in 1986. On club level, beside the number of domestic successes, his biggest achievement is the European Champions Cup title, he has taken with Budapest Honvéd in 1982. Kovács has shown his class abroad as well, having won both the German championship and cup title. He was also awarded the Sportsman of the Year prize while in Dortmund, just ahead of the football professionals of the local club Borussia. Thanks to his outstanding performances he was given the nickname "Peter the Great".
