Gustavo Arcos
Gustavo Arcos Bergnes (December 19, 1926, in Caibarién, Cuba – August 8, 2006, in Havana, Cuba) was a fellow Cuban revolutionary alongside Fidel Castro who later became an imprisoned dissident of the government. Arcos has been described as "a symbol of the opposition, and the dean of the opposition". Biography Born in the small town of Caibarién, Arcos met Castro while the two attended law school at the University of Havana. He participated in the 1953 attack on Moncada Barracks that jump-started the Cuban Revolution against then-leader Fulgencio Batista, where he suffered a gunshot wound to the back that partially disabled his right leg and left him a legacy of lifelong pain. Freed under a pardon, Arcos spent the next several years gathering support, money, and munitions throughout Mexico, South America, and the United States. Caibarién
Caibarién is a municipality city in the Villa Clara Province, Villa Clara province of Cuba. Caibarién is known as "La Villa Blanca" () for its sands and beaches. They are famous for their "Parrandas" (Carnivals) along with Remedios, Cuba, Remedios (the neighboring town located west) and Camajuani. History At the end of 1513, Pánfilo de Narváez las Casas and Grijalba explored the territory. Indigenous settlements were found in the region now occupied by the municipality and in Cayo Conuco. In 1819, the port of Tesisco was closed and Caibarién was ordered to be opened. From 1822 onwards, neighbors from Remedios began to arrive and there was already a population center in the part of Parrado. Narciso de Justa gave land from his hacienda for the foundation of the town. On October 26, 1832, the town was founded based on a plan conceived by Estratón Bauza. Partido Ortodoxo
The Party of the Cuban People – Orthodox (, PPC-O), commonly shortened to the Orthodox Party (), was a Cuban populist political party. It was founded in 1947 by Eduardo Chibás in response to government corruption and lack of reform. Its primary aims were the establishment of a distinct national identity, economic independence and the implementation of social reforms. History In the 1948 general elections Chibás came third in the presidential election, whilst the party won four seats in the House of Representatives. In the 1950 mid-term elections they won nine. Carlos Prío Socarrás
Carlos Manuel Prío Socarrás (; July 14, 1903 – April 5, 1977) was a Cuban politician. He served as the President of Cuba from 1948 until he was deposed by a military coup led by Fulgencio Batista on March 10, 1952, three months before new elections were to be held. He was the first president of Cuba to be born in an independent Cuba and the last to gain his post through universal, contested elections. He went into exile in the United States, where he lived for 25 years before dying by suicide at age 73. Governance In 1940, Prío was elected senator of Pinar del Río Province.
