Gulf Railroad
The Gulf Railroad was incorporated under the laws of Oklahoma Territory on June 2, 1896. In 1897 it built 10.1 miles of track from Wakita, Oklahoma to Medford, Oklahoma. In the 1897-1898 timeframe, it built 26.6 miles of track from Medford to Blackwell, Oklahoma. The President of the railroad, W.A. Bradford, Jr., purchased 160 acres of land and established the town of Deer Creek, Oklahoma along that section of the line on March 14, 1898. The railroad was sold to the Hutchinson and Southern Railway Company, with the property conveyed by two deeds dated March 22, 1898 and November 13, 1899. Oklahoma Territory
The Territory of Oklahoma was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from May 2, 1890, until November 16, 1907, when it was joined with the Indian Territory under a new constitution and admitted to the Union as the state of Oklahoma. The 1890 Oklahoma Organic Act organized the western half of Indian Territory and a strip of country north of Texas known as No Man's Land (now the Oklahoma Panhandle) into Oklahoma Territory. Native American reservations in the new territory were then opened to settlement in a series of land runs in 1890, 1891, and 1893. Seven counties were defined upon the creation of the territory. They were originally designated by number and eventually became Logan, Cleveland, Oklahoma, Canadian, Kingfisher, Payne, and Beaver counties. Wakita, Oklahoma
Wakita is a town in Grant County, Oklahoma, United States, approximately south of the Kansas border. Its population was 311 at the 2020 census, a decrease of 9.5 percent (from 344) at the 2010 census. History Before the town's founding in 1898, there was a dispute over the right to name the town. The town's postmaster, and the owner of the first general store, and the town's first postmaster, believed it should be named Whiteville. Local Deputy U.S. Marshall Herbert John Green motioned for the town be named after a Cherokee chief of local significance named Wakita (pronounced Wok-ih-taw). Green and other local settlers wanted to name the town in the chief's honor because of a protective spell cast by the chief's tribe to protect the area around the town, between Crooked Creek and Pond Creek, from tornadoes for 100 years. Medford, Oklahoma
Medford is a city in and the county seat of Grant County, Oklahoma, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 996. History ''The Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture'' states only that the town name was for Medford, Massachusetts, which it says was the home town of a railroad official. Before the opening of the Cherokee Outlet to non-Indian settlement on September 16, 1893, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway (later the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad) built a line from southern Kansas that passed through the future Medford townsite in a north–south direction. A post office was established October 31, 1893. The townsfolk voted to incorporate on March 10, 1894. Blackwell is a city in Kay County, Oklahoma, United States, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 177 and State Highway 11 along Interstate 35. The population was 6,085 as of the 2020 census. Deer Creek is an incorporated community in Grant County, Oklahoma, United States. The population stood at 130 according to the 2010 census, an 11.6 percent decrease from a figure of 147 in 2000. Hutchinson And Southern Railway
The Hutchinson and Southern Railway was incorporated under the general laws of the State of Kansas on December 21, 1897. On January 21, 1898 it acquired at foreclosure the assets of the Hutchinson and Southern Railroad Company, which had built 90.7 miles of trackage from Hutchinson, Kansas south through Kingman, Kansas and Anthony, Kansas to terminate at Wakita, Oklahoma. In the 1898-1899 timeframe, it also acquired all the assets of the Gulf Railroad Company, which had built 36.7 miles of track from Wakita to Blackwell, Oklahoma. In 1899 the railway built 14.5 miles of track from Blackwell to Ponca City, Oklahoma. Atchison, Topeka And Santa Fe Railway
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the largest Class 1 railroads in the United States between 1859 and 1996. The Santa Fe was a pioneer in intermodal freight transport; at various times, it operated an airline, the short-lived Santa Fe Skyway, and the Santa Fe Railroad tugboats. Its bus line extended passenger transportation to areas not accessible by rail, and ferryboats on the San Francisco Bay allowed travelers to complete their westward journeys to the Pacific Ocean. The AT&SF was the subject of a popular song, Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer's " On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe", written for the film '' The Harvey Girls'' (1946).
