Guanacaste Province
Guanacaste () is a Provinces of Costa Rica, province of Costa Rica located in the northwestern region of the country, along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Alajuela Province to the east, and Puntarenas Province to the southeast. It is the most sparsely populated of all the provinces of Costa Rica. The province covers an area of and as of 2010, had a population of 354,154, with annual revenue of $2 billion. Guanacaste's capital is Liberia, Costa Rica, Liberia. Other important cities include Cañas District, Cañas and Nicoya. Etymology The province is named for the Enterolobium cyclocarpum, guanacaste tree, also known as the ear pod tree, which is the national tree of Costa Rica. A province is an administrative division within a country or sovereign state, state. The term derives from the ancient Roman , which was the major territorial and administrative unit of the Roman Empire, Roman Empire's territorial possessions outside Roman Italy, Italy. José Daniel Ortega Saavedra (; ; born 11 November 1945) is a Nicaraguan politician and dictator who has been the president of Nicaragua, co-president of Nicaragua since 18 February 2025, alongside his wife Rosario Murillo. Rivas () is a city and Municipalities of Nicaragua, municipality in southwestern Nicaragua on the Isthmus of the same name. Nicarao People
The Nicarao are an Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Indigenous Nahua people who live in western Nicaragua and northwestern Costa Rica. They are the southernmost Nahua group located in southern Mesoamerica. They spoke the Nahuat language, Nahuat language before it went extinct in both countries after Spanish conquest. The Nicarao are descended from Toltecs who migrated from North America and central and southern Mexico over the course of several centuries from approximately 700 CE onwards. This branch of the Nahua originated in Chiapas, which was inhabited by Nawat language, Nahuat-speaking Toltecs for hundreds of years before they migrated further into Central America. Huetar People
The Huetares are an important indigenous group of Costa Rica, who in the mid-16th century lived in the center of what is now the country. They are also mentioned with the name of güetares or pacacuas. Huetares were the most powerful and best-organized indigenous nation in Costa Rica upon the arrival of the Spaniards.
